Explain in detail the term Fallow?

If I have a farmland and choose not to cultivate it by not planting any plants or crops on the farmland for the purpose of allowing the soil to restore itself, I have practiced fallow.

With that being said, it means fallow is an agricultural practice where farmers leave their farmland uncultivated, not planted with crops, for a certain period of time, so that the soil can restore itself and regain its natural fertility.

During such periods of fallow farmers don't farm on the farmland, they don't plant anything on the farmland. Instead what farmers do is to just allow the farmland to recover naturally, with the growth of grasses, natural vegetation ot shrubs which decompose and add nutrients into the soil naturally.

Types of fallow:

We have the following types of fallow practice by farmers;

• The natural fallow is the land left for natural vegetation to grow.

• The Improved fallow which farmers plant special crops to help restore the nutrients of the soil faster

• The short fallow which the land is left unattended for a short period of a year.

• The long fallow period during which the land may be left unused for so many years to fully restored

What is the importance of Fallow?

• Restores soil fertility: It is important because it restores soil fertility by leaving land uncultivated for nutrients to regain.

• Controls Weeds: fallow reduces certain weeds because they are destroyed before planting season.

• Disease cycles and breaks pest: When land is left uncultivated pests and diseases can spread.

• Improves Soil structure: During the period of fallow, plant roots and organic matter improve soil texture, and water retention.
