Explain in detail the term Horticulture

Horticulture is a part of agriculture that focuses on science, business, and growing vegetables, fruits, ornamental plants, flowers, and the art of keeping our environment beautiful.

It is a Latin word that is abbreviated to two parts: "hortus," meaning garden, and "cultura" meaning cultivation. Putting these two words together sun up the words as horticulture which therefore means the cultivation of garden crops.

Those who are into horticulture are involved in the improvement, production, management, and marketing of plants that are used for decoration, environmental beautification, and food. Horticulture focuses more on nurturing small crops.

Types of Horticulture:

• Landscape horticulture: This is the type of horticulture that takes good care of designing, planting, and maintaining parks, and gardens.

• Floriculture: This is the type that is into the cultivation of ornamental plants and flowers 🌺

• Pomology: This type of horticulture studies the cultivation of fruits.

• Olericulture: This is the type that is more into the production of vegetables.

What is the importance of Horticulture?

• It is a source of nutritious food as it provides us with fruits and vegetables that are very rich in vitamins, fiber, antioxidants, and minerals.

• It provides us with employment opportunities in areas like farming, landscaping, nursery management, marketing, and flower production.

• Horticulture protects our environment by providing oxygen, reducing air pollution, soil erosion, and improving soil fertility.

• Horticulture makes our environment look beautiful when flowers, ornamental plants, and lawns are used to decorate our parks, schools, cities, and homes.
