Are black beans good for you?
I've actually never had black beans before and last week was the first time I ever got some from the supermarket. I have been so used to the normal beans we use to make Gob3 in Ghana.
I choose beans a lot mostly because they are much cheaper than meat and I can't afford to buy meat as frequently as I used to. My mum says that black beans have lots of nutritional benefits, but she also thinks that everything homemade is the best for you so wasn't surprised to hear her say that
But I wanted to know what really is in black beans? They seem to be a good source of protein, they're beans, and I never thought about this until I started eating them on a regular basis. They are also a source of fibre, which will help with digestion. Prior to this, I have always thought of fibre as being something that older people worry about, but since eating beans for a few weeks, I have noticed that I am not feeling as sluggish during the afternoons. This could just be a coincidence or maybe there is something to this.
On the negative side of things, it takes a long time to cook black beans. Actually, just the two dayd ago, I decided that I was going to forget about soaking the beans the night before and try to speed up the cooking time, only to discover that it took hours for them to soften. So I wasted a full tank of gas and wasted a lot of time cooking beans. Now I try to be more careful, but sometime so I do forget.
I searched online and I read that black beans are also good for heart health, specifically, they lower cholesterol levels. Again, I'm not exactly sure how this works, but it seems to make sense to me. They are also said to help regulate blood sugar levels, my sister would benefit from this if she would only take my advice and listen.
I don't feel like I have a dramatic difference in my body after eating black beans, it just feels normal. I don't think that they are superfoods, but they are a decent source of nutrition and can be purchased at a low price.
