Carrots and potatoes together

in Steem-Agro12 days ago

So is it okay to get carrots and potatoes together? I'm only talking about this because of what my aunt's opinions are.
For me it's an absolute yes, you can totally do that. I make stew myself all the time, in fact, I did this just last week and planning on doing it today, already got the stuff but they ordered food so I'll put a pause on it and make the Stew tomorrow.

When I made my last stew, I just added everything to the pot all at once, carrots, potatoes, green beans, even some leftover cabbage from the fridge. Everything cooked together just fine. I had to cut the potatoes smaller than the carrots though since they take longer to cook.

My Aunt insists that you must cook potatoes separately first and then add other vegetables at different times. She claims it is all about timing and not doing it this way will ruin your stew. I have tried cooking them her way and I cannot really tell a difference, but perhaps I'm just not paying enough attention.

At the end of the day, the size of the cut potatoes is most important. If you cut the potatoes too large, they will remain hard while all the other vegetables will become soft. I once made that mistake being in a hurry and not cutting them right. I had to fish them out of the stew and microwave them later, which was seriously annoying.

I no longer peel my carrots. I scrub them well instead. I provide some peeling on my potatoes occasionally, depending on my mood or actually, on how dirty they appear. Some types of potatoes that are grown in places like Ireland have a lot of dirt on them so I've been told but I think it's a general thing because here in Ghana you get some okay and some dirty.

In any case, when you cook all the vegetables together, the flavours will blend. Whether it's soup, stew or anything else, they all taste like one dish rather than separate bowls of vegetables sitting next to one another.
