Is Cassava good for weight loss?
Cassava is a common part of people's diets here in Ghana and in Nigeria and most parts of Africa because it is a staple food and is often used to make various meals like my favorite Fufu, Garri and Tapioca. But there seems to be confusion around the health benefits of eating cassava as some do believe that carbohydrates are bad for weight loss, creating a conflict with the fact that cassava is a significant source of carbohydrates.
The truth is cassava is not a weight loss food, being high in calories and carbohydrates. A medium size cassava root contains over 300 calories and this does not include any processed foods or other additions. If you are trying to lose weight, eating cassava three times per day is not likely going to help your plan.
The one thing I like about it is that it's very filling. It fills you up for a long period of time after eating. This means that after you have eaten it, you will have less of an urge to get some snack later because you are satisfied from eating cassava. But I'll have to say that different people have different capacity for what they can eat. For me it's enough but for my brother, he'll definitely want to finish his, go for mine and add snacks too and yet I'm bigger in size than he is.
Being filled with little will help you to achieve your weight loss goals in the long run, that's the point I'm trying to make.
It's a great source of fiber as well, particularly when compared to eating heavily processed Garri, cassava is helpful to keep your digestive system working properly. That's why cassava is not likely to be a weight loss villain as many people think.
Cassava alone will not help you to lose weight. If you over eat cassava, you will definitely gain weight just as with any food. But if you properly portion cassava with vegetables and proteins, you have a great diet. The weight loss effect associated with cassava depends on what you eat with it and how much you eat.
