Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s safe

Scrolling to my X feed and I saw this tweet about the use of pawpaw sap. I had to take a screenshot shot of it and although I don't have that health issue I did wonder one time whether it was true.

I did think pawpaw sap was a total medicinal miracle and being raised by a mother who's into natural medicine making you understand why I would think that way right?

I mean, there’s a ton of folklore out there that mentions the sap as well as a specific enzyme that actually removes the dead skin from open wounds papain. I know that there are even some instances where doctors use gel forms of papain. So, I guess in theory, it makes sense on some level.

But, when you take pure pawpaw sap straight from the tree and put it on your wound, you’re rubbing tree juice on the open wound. That doesn’t sound too bad until you remember that the open wound can easily become infected. Plus the potency of the sap is no joke, it can actually burn healthy skin or cause you to have an allergic reaction.

So, if you have a wound that just won’t heal after several weeks or months, there’s typically something else going on below that surface, maybe diabetes, poor circulation or some other sort of system issue. I’m not a doctor and I’ve never claimed to be, but it seems pretty simple and common sense that whatever you put on top of a wound is not going to fix what’s happening underneath.

I can completely understand why people reach for sap because it’s right outside in your own backyard, and feels like you’re actually doing something pro active or am I wrong about that?

Sometimes, I feel like people want to find quick easy answers, even though the solution may require much more than they’re ready to face. Plus, seeing a doctor usually feels like admitting defeat, even when you clearly know it’s the safest option and paying money they could save but it's cheaper in the long run to treat a disease the right way than to find your own solutions which haven't been prescribed by a profession.
