Until I started preparing meals on my own, I had no idea how great lentils could be for your health. I thought of them as something my mum would use in her cooking when she was tired of making rice and could just throw into soups without even thinking about it. But when I was looking for more different meals to take since variety os also a good thing, they weren't too much in price.

I will never forget the first time I prepared them on my own. It's funny because I used to think they were so simple to prepare, but when I added the water, I put in too much and had a watery mess, and it took ages for the liquid to evaporate. But I ate it anyways, didn't really enjoyed that one. But I've gotten a bit good at it, in other words I know just how much water I need to use.

It's interesting how they can aid in digestion, as I said, I don't know how it all works, but I can definitely tell that when I eat lentils compared with a more substantial meal of rice or banku, I feel less bloated and uncomfortable. Lentils have iron, which is beneficial for our blood. Perhaps this is also one of the reasons I feel so tired, my sister frequently tells me that I should take in more iron.

The main disadvantage of lentils and this is subjective, they aren't very exciting. They don't have much flavour on their own, they require a lot of seasoning to make them palatable. But they are such dependable crops because they are inexpensive, can be easily stored and have an incredibly long shelf life.
