So how much space does each cabbage plant need?
At one time, I thought that any garden would succeed with cabbages being planted close together all over the garden, I didn't have much regard for spacing. But it turns out that is not really true and actually the opposite if you want to grow quality heads of cabbage.
Most people create a distance of 30-45 cm approximately 12 to 18 inches depending on your area and how you measure. This really depends on the variety of cabbage that you are growing because some will be much larger than others and have compact growth. So it is important to consider your variety of cabbage when deciding how much space to provide.
If you are planting in rows, you need to leave a distance of 60 cm or approximately 24 inches between the rows so that you have enough room to walk through between them to weed and harvest without stepping on them. I have also seen gardens where some people have planted their cabbages too closely together, and the result has been too much competition for the light, so the heads were small and loose rather than nice and firm.
Another thing to consider, is that when cabbages are planted too closely, there is not enough space for the roots to spread outdoors properly. Cabbages are heavy feeders and when you plant them too closely together, they compete not only for sunlight but for nutrients in the soil as well as water.
Spacing also affects the movement of air around the plants. When plants are planted too closely together moisture builds up between the leaves creating a micro climate. This is an environment that is conducive to fungal diseases like rot and mildew.
Some farmers use greater spacing than this, some choose to space at 50 cm or 20 inches if the soil is very rich, and some others have found that in order to produce more cabbages they will have plant them closely together, so it is not really a fixed distance.

Thanks for sharing this essential knowledge with us. Spacing during planting is one planting tool that has been taken lightly; however, it comes with numerous benefits.
