Why maize is called corn in different parts of the world
I was wondering why we have different names for corn and so I decided to do a little research, I could be wrong on this because you can't tell if who you're learning history from is accurate or not but I did learn some stuff.
The staple food called maize in most of Africa gets different names throughout the rest of the world, it is known as maize by those of African descent and corn on United States and some other countries, but the word maize comes from the Taíno word ‘mahiz,’ which Spanish explorers adopted after arriving in the Caribbean.
The Spanish adopted the Taíno word and took the seeds to add to what they were growing in the Americas. It is actually the British who created confusion when they began referring to all grains as corn. And because of this situation, when someone refers to corn in the UK, people think of what the British have labelled corn as opposed to the maize they call it.
The Americans kept this mistake and continue to produce the greatest amount of corn in the world, but still at scientific conventions, researchers use the term maize so they don't end up confusing the product with wheat or barley. The word also has historical significance.
Christopher Columbus brought it to Europe, maybe that's why it became so popular because it can be found everywhere. I really wonder why we could not just update our textbooks to have maize listed there, I think it would be much more accurate.
The yellow varieties of corn usually taste sweeter than the white varieties, there are also some instances where farmers used too much fertilizer on their crops so the original varieties tend to taste a little weird and not very good but that's just subjective opinion I'm sharing here. Perhaps the rest of the world would prefer that we use the original name of corn as given by the Taino people, and maybe we are also just keeping a legacy word of an English name that no longer has meaning to us.
