Near a village there was a vast field where greenery stretched far and wide. In that field a farmer lived happily with his family and animals. Among these animals was a small dog named “Shiro”. Shiro was not like ordinary dogs. He was very gentle loyal and a little timid. There were big bulls powerful horses and many goats in the field. All the animals considered Shiro weak. Because he stayed away from fights. Whenever there was a loud noise Shiro would immediately go to a corner and hide. The other animals would also make fun of him. The farmer’s son Ali loved Shiro very much. He played with him every day fed him and patted his head and said. “You will be very brave one day.” Shiro was happy to hear this. But he did not believe in himself.

One day news spread in the village. That a dangerous thief was roaming in the nearby forest. Who stole animals from the fields at night. Hearing this the farmer tightened the arrangements for the safety of all the animals. As soon as night fell everyone would be locked in the enclosure. That night the sky was covered with clouds and there was deep darkness everywhere. The wind was also blowing strongly rustling the leaves of the trees. All the animals fell asleep but Shiro could not sleep. His heart was restless as if he sensed something was happening. Suddenly at midnight a light sound came from near the enclosure door. Shiro was startled. He slowly raised his head and saw a shadow moving near the wall. It was not an ordinary animal. But a human being who was trying to sneak in. Shiro's heart beats faster. He was scared. But he remembered Ali's words "You will be brave one day." He gathered his courage. If he had remained silent perhaps an animal would have been stolen.

At first he started barking softly. But then he started barking loudly with all his might. Hearing his voice the other animals also woke up. And started making noise. Guys the thief got scared and started running away quickly. The farmer also woke up after hearing the noise. He immediately came out with a stick. But by then the thief had run away. The farmer saw that all the animals were safe. And the lion was barking continuously. The next morning when everyone came to know what had happened at night. Everyone was shocked. The same lion who was always afraid had protected everyone. Now no one was making fun of him.

The farmer hugged the lion lovingly and said “Today you have proven that bravery is in the heart not in the body.” Ali jumped up with joy. He hugged the lion tightly and said “I told you, you are brave.” After that day the lion changed. Now he was not as timid as before. He was always alert and protected his field. The other animals also started respecting him. A few days later friends another incident occurred. A small calf got stuck in the mud at the edge of the field. All the animals were watching from a distance. But no one was moving forward. Shiro immediately ran and called the farmer. The farmer came and saved the calf. Now everyone was convinced that Shiro was not just a dog but a true protector. His courage and loyalty won everyone’s hearts.

One evening the sun was setting and the sky was bathed in golden color. Ali and Shiro were sitting at the edge of the field. Ali smiled and said “You are my best friend.” Shiro happily wagged his tail and came and sat next to him. Shiro was still the same kind of hearted dog. But now a new strength had come within him. The power of self belief.

This story teaches us that no one is weak. Sometimes we just need to recognize the courage within ourselves. When we believe in ourselves we can do great things. And Shiro? He is still in that same field today staying up every night to protect his home with a brave heart.
