Papaya trees need high and dry land to grow well. The land should not be waterlogged and should be sun-drenched. It is important to have a good drainage system. Before cultivating the land, the salty and rocky soil should be thoroughly removed and prepared by mixing manure and organic fertilizer. However, it is also being cultivated in our area in mixed cultivation. It is also grown as a companion crop along with fish farming on the banks of ponds. If you want, you can plant it on high ground on the banks of ponds.

Seed selection and sowing:
After Select the land, we must collect good quality papaya seeds. Again, keep in mind that we have to plant varieties of papaya that are in high demand. Selecting good quality papaya seeds is the first step. Papaya seeds can usually be hybrid or local varieties. However, green-lady, red-lady varieties of papaya are of much higher quality. Before planting the seeds, soak them in water for some time so that they germinate quickly. The seeds can be germinated directly in the ground or in a container. Sow 2-3 seeds in each hole. Or if you want, you can buy seedlings from the nursery and plant them.
Fertilizer and care:

Papaya trees need regular fertilizer for growth. It is best to use organic fertilizer initially at the seedling stage. After the tree grows, you need to use fertilizer rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potash every month. Regular watering and keeping the weeds clean are very important. I have made a list in the table below.
Plant Age | Fertilizer Type | Amount (per plant) | Application Time |
---|---|---|---|
1–2 months | Organic manure (cow dung/compost) | 5–6 kg | During planting |
2–4 months | Urea | 25 g | Once a month |
TSP (Phosphorus) | 20 g | Every 2 months | |
MOP (Potash) | 20 g | Every 2 months | |
5–8 months | Urea | 50 g | Once a month |
TSP | 30 g | Every 3 months | |
MOP | 30 g | Every 3 months | |
9 months to fruiting | Urea | 100 g | Once a month |
TSP | 50 g | Every 4 months | |
MOP | 50 g | Every 4 months | |
After fruit set | Organic manure | 8–10 kg | Twice a year (monsoon & winter) |
Disease and pest control
Papaya trees can be affected by various diseases, such as papaya pine or fungal infections. To prevent diseases, check the tree regularly and spray fungicides or insecticides if necessary. For fungi, you can use tebuconazole or difenconazole or you can use any fungicide from the triazole group. For insects, using imidacloprid is the safest and most environmentally friendly.
Crop preservation and harvesting:

Papaya fruits mature in 6-9 months. Cut and collect the fruit when it starts to turn from green to yellow. Be careful while harvesting papaya so that the fruit is not damaged. However, it can be harvested in its raw state in 4-5 months or 6 months. This papaya can be used as a vegetable. The price of unripe papaya is comparatively lower than that of ripe papaya in the market.

Papa a fruit in demand. It can be sold in local markets, supermarkets or online platforms. Or it is in good demand as a vegetable in city restaurants. If you sell healthy and ripe fruits, you get a good price. So we have to take papaya to the market very early in the morning. Papaya cultivation should initially be kept with patience and regular care. However, if you follow the right method, it is a very profitable crop. Because it costs much less than other crops. According to today's market price, the price of one kg of papaya is 1.5 steem

I hope it is possible to earn $500-800 per year by cultivating papaya on 0.1335 hectares of the land. So, you can earn money by cultivating this papaya in the fallow land in their backyard.
