SEC-S30W4: Building a Fable | The proud mirror and the humble broom!

In a small cozy room, there lived two objects that saw the world differently, a shiny mirror standing by the wall and an old broom resting quietly by the corner.

The mirror was beautiful. It's surface was always clean and polished, reflecting everything that stood before it. People admired themselves in it everyday smiling at their appearances. Because of this, the mirror grew proud.

“One could say I am the most important object in this room, the mirror often boasted. Everyone looks at me and I make them feel confident and happy. But imagine, without me how would they even know how they look?

The broom worn out from daily use, listened quietly. It's bristles were slightly bent and shortened, it's handle had torns from years of sweeping the floor.

Look, I may not be as admired as you, the broom said gently one day, but I also serve a purpose. I help keep the room clean.

The mirror laughed, did you say clean? That is such a lowly job. You deal with dust and dirt all day, while I reflect beauty. Clearly, I am far more valuable.

The broom did not argue, it simply continued doing it's work everyday, sweeping away dirts, dust, and little bits of trials that gathered on the floor.

The humble broom

One afternoon, a strong wind blew through the open window, dust and dirts filled the room, settling everywhere on the floor, furnitures and even on the mirror.

For the first time, the mirror's surface became dull and blur. When the owner of the room came in, they tried to look into the mirror but frowned.

“I can barely see myself”, the said, disappointed

The mirror felt embarrassed, it had never looked so unattractive before. It tried to shine but the dust covered it completely.

Meanwhile the broom as usual was picked up and used to clean the room thoroughly. It swept the floor carefully, gathering all the dirt one place. After that, the owner used a cloth to wipe the mirror clean

Slowly, the mirror regained it's shine.

As the room went back normal, the mirror remained silent. It had realized something important.

That evening, the mirror spoke to the broom in a softer tone.

“I must apologize”, it said, “I was wrong to think I was better than you. Without your work, this room will remain dirty and I would not be able to reflect anything clearly.

The broom smiled quietly, “We all have our roles, no matter how small or big they seem, each one matters”

From that day onwards the mirror behaved better. It appreciated the broom and all the other objects in the room. It understood that for one to be valued, it must be useful.

Moral

• Never look down on others because every role is important.

• True worth comes from usefulness not pride
