Explain in detail the term Fertilization

Source

Fertilisation is the biological process in which reproductive cells called the sperm combine with the female reproductive cells called the ovum (egg) to form a new cell known as a zygote. This process which I have talked about is what marks the beginning of the development of a new organism in humans, animals, and also in several plants.

In human beings and some animals, fertilisation usually takes place inside the female reproductive system, most especially in the female fallopian tube. Also during this process when a sperm successfully penetrates the egg and their genetic materials unite. The sperm and the egg contain half of the information of the genetic information needed to create a new being.

In addition to what has been said, there are two major types of fertilisation, which are:

  • Internal fertilisation which occurs inside the female body

  • External fertilisation which occurs outside the body which is mostly in water.

What is the importance of Fertilization?

The importance of fertilisation is vast which some of the importance are as follows:

  • Production of new life: it leads to the formation of a new organism which without fertilisation, sexual production can't happen in humans and a lot of animals.

  • Continuity of Species: Fertilisation helps to maintain and preserve different species from generation to generation.

  • Combination of Genetic Traits: It combines genes from both parents mother and father which leads to variation among offspring, making individuals unique in characteristics and appearance.
