What exactly is farm management?

To understand what farm management is, I have to explain the objective of it. The word is efficiency and profitability. It is about the operations of the farm and how it is organized so the farm can maximize the fruitfulness of his farm.

So much goes into farming, the land you'll farm on, the labor force on the farm and investments you'll need to make to ensure that all these things are put in place so that at the end of the day, your farm creates the value it's intended to create. The objective is not always about making profits, it could be an environmental goal. You could say you're building a farm so the community can have a good source of food. Whether it's for personal profit or not, all that you'll need to put in place to ensure its success is what farm management is.

The farmer is no different from a CEO but the difference is that he has a more unpredictable job than your standard CEO does. Weather patterns can change anytime and the growth cycles of the crops are also unpredictable.

If you want to successfully manage your farm well, you need to start with a very good plan. Building something without a plan is planning to waste resources. What crops or livestock do you intend to have on your farm? Do you intend to scale really big or do you want to maintain a small farm? Are you going to use advanced technology or traditional methods? All these things will decide the fate of the farm. You need to check the market price of the produce you're planning on having and compare it to your pocket or any loan access you have before you make a decision.

The capital you need is determined by what exactly you're trying to have on the farm. More crops more hands on deck. You'll have to pay more laborers and not just any kind, the skilled ones. If it's crops you'll need to get the right seeds. If it's livestock you'll need to get healthy little offspring. Have all these things well organized after you're done planning.

You'll need to watch over the farm and keep your eyes fixed on the actual results the farm brings and compare that to your original plan. If all is going well it means you've done the right thing. If not, it means you're missing something.

The importance of farm management

The importance of farm management is sustainability. You can only have it stable and sustainable long term if you make it operate like a viable business does. By doing so you're using proper land, the right resources, the right labor, you're heavily reducing the risk of losing your capital and ensuring that you the farmer make profits while the farm ensures food security for the community or the nation.
