Pick and Write [Crop Rotation]👉#17
PICK AND WRITE [CROP ROTATION]👉 #17
Last term, I had the opportunity to engage my students in a practical agricultural activity that turned out to be both educational and rewarding. We cultivated cucumbers in our small school garden, and watching the students nurture the plants from seedlings to harvest was an exciting experience. The joy on their faces as they harvested fresh cucumbers was priceless.
This term, however, we are not planting cucumbers again on the same plot of land.
Instead, we have decided to plant maize and okro. This decision is not random; it is a deliberate practice of crop rotation, an important agricultural technique that involves growing different crops on the same land in successive seasons.
Crop rotation helps maintain soil fertility. Cucumbers, like many crops, absorb specific nutrients from the soil. If we continue planting cucumbers repeatedly on the same land, those nutrients will become depleted, leading to reduced yield over time.By planting maize and okro this term, we allow the soil to regain balance, as different crops utilize and return nutrients differently.
Another reason we are practising crop rotation is to control pests and diseases. During the cucumber planting season, certain pests and diseases may have adapted to that crop. By changing to maize and okro, we break the life cycle of those pests, making it harder for them to survive and multiply. This ensures healthier crops and better harvests.
Crop rotation also improves soil structure. Some crops have deep roots while others have shallow roots. This variation helps to loosen the soil, improve aeration, and enhance water retention. As a result, our farm becomes more productive and sustainable.
Teaching my students about crop rotation through this hands-on approach has made the concept clearer and more meaningful to them. They now understand that farming is not just about planting, but about making smart decisions that protect the soil and ensure long-term productivity.
In conclusion, crop rotation is a simple but powerful farming practice that every farmer should adopt. Through our school garden, my students are not only learning agriculture but also developing skills that can help them in the future. Our transition from cucumber last term to maize and okro this term is a practical example of how crop rotation works in real life.
I invite my friends @ZulayRomero, @Ngoenyi and @NINAPENDA to participate in this contest.
