MY BROILER CHICKEN JOURNEY FROM DAY OLD TO FINISH 17/09/2026

Today I'm sharing my experience raising broiler chickens from day old to finish. As an agriculture student in JOSTUM, practical experience is key.

^{DAY OLD}

We welcomed 50 day-old chicks to our farm. Before receiving the the day old chicks, we made sure the the pen is arranged. We provided - Heat (32°C) - Glucose in water - Clean bedding - ultima Starter feed

We all know well that broilers deserve well protein starter feed. For that I choose to use Ultima feed for a better and fast growth.

Broilers breed grow fast, so we focused on feeding 3x daily, monitoring for diseases, maintaining litter quality, clean water and using some organic methods for disease control.

This stage is one of the crucial stage in poultry farming, because if not careful diseases and infections such as coccidiosis, Gomboro, Newcastle and the rest will easily affect your farm.

Organic method of disease prevention is one of the most underrated methods to against disease and infections in broiler production. From day old to finish, I used pawpaw leaf and bitter leaf to maintain my bird's health.

I recommend this organic method to other farmers to use, if you don't know how to go about it, I can put you through. And I promise you, you'll love the effect of it on your birds

At week 3 I changed the feed from starter to grower. Most farmers avoid using grower but I think it's very good and healthy for our birds because they need it for growth and maintain good energy and form. To be honest there's no rest at this stage because the bird's have started developing and more space.

I hardly sleep always checking up on them, washing their feeders and to make sure there's clean and enough water for them. I normally sweep the 3-4 times a day to keep it clean, warm and disease free.

Another important thing at this stage is the Ventilation. As you all know broilers are not comfortable with heat. Infact heat can wipe out your whole birds in interval of 5 minutes. Heat is deadly for broilers. So sometimes every afternoon I let them out under a very big tree to receive good ventilation and that helps them a lot.

At week 5 i switched to finisher feed (20% CP). I started feeding them with finisher. At this stage wow my birds have already grown big and healthy. I had to change their pen because the space was becoming tight for them.

To my surprise at week 6, customers started coming to book. Because the birds are so big and healthy. A day I sold not less that 10 birds. The business was good, my time, efforts, pain, sacrifice was worth it.

From the 50 birds stock, 48 survived. I had only two mortality. Average weight was1.8kg in 5 weeks. Isold to local market, restaurant, kitchen and hostels around my area. My neighbors also patronize me.

- Biosecurity is the key - Monitor the feed conversion ratio - Study the market - start small and grow big. - never borrow money to start your farm - Always check up on your birds - maintain a proper ventilation system.
