SC-S33/W6-Movies that changed my perspective (Shutter Island)
G’day Everyone!
Today I am participating in week 6 of the steemit challenge with “Movie Diaries”.
There are some movies that have more than just entertained us…
They have had such an impact on our psyche with regard to comprehending the intricacies of the human mind.
One such film for me was this 2010 psychological thriller ‘Shutter Island’ directed by none other than Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
1. Brief Introduction of the Movie
Set in 1954, Shutter Island follows US Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), as they head for Ashecliffe Hospital – a fortress-style mental institution situated on a remote island.
The pair are there because a patient called Rachel Solando has mysteriously disappeared after escaping from her own locked room. As Teddy goes further into the heart of the facility, however, he finds some pretty shocking truths that also trigger both bad memories and nasty migraines along the way.
2. Favorite Character and Scene
I personally feel my favorite character has been Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio).
Teddy was great to watch as he always had tons of great emotions happening around him along with his confusion and drive for justice.
I love the ending of the movie! When Teddy gets to the top of the lighthouse expecting some sort of horrifying medical experiments, he’s met by Dr. Cawley, who tells him that Teddy is really Andrew Laeddis, the hospital's most dangerous patient, and that everything that happened during the investigation was all just part of an experiment with which they were trying to get him to accept what's real. I won't spoil anything else but wow what a twist! That scene blew my mind away, you can’t help but fall in love with DiCaprio after watching him give his amazing performance in this scene.
3. How This Movie Changed My Perspective
I am writing about the film “Shutter Island” because prior to watching this film I had always viewed reality as an objective thing - what you saw was reality and there wasn’t anything else. After viewing this film, my views on psychology and human memory has changed dramatically. This movie really showed me how people use their minds to create these intricate defense mechanisms to run away from their terrible experiences and feelings such as guilt or despair.
Also, the last scene with the classic dialogue – “Which would be worse…to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?”- forever shifted how I view things such as acceptance and guilt.
4. Why I Recommend This Movie
I would highly recommend watching Shutter Island if you're someone who loves deep thought-provoking cinema!
Shutter Island isn't just about a good story or having an unexpected plot twist at some point - This film dives into many different aspects of human nature such as grief, guilt & mental illness.
With all these factors combined along with its amazing atmosphere through cinematography, score & masterclass performance by actors I'm sure this will be one movie you never forget.
I would like to invite my friends @ahsansharif, @m-princess, and @josepha to participate in this contest!
