Hints/Guidelines

What is Heliculture

The word heliculture is also known as snail farming from “Helix Greek word meaning snails. In this case, it's a process of raising and breeding snails under controlled conditions for food, trade, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and industrial uses.

You know the main species commonly reared in Africa include:

Achatina achatina (Giant Ghana snail)
Achatina fulica (East African giant snail)
Achatina marginata (Giant West African snail)

In this case, these species are preferred because of their ; fast growth rate, large size, and adaptability.

What are the requirements for snail Farming

To establish a successful snail farming requires certain methods in environmental, biological, and managerial conditions to be met. These include:

Suitable Environment and Housing:

The soil should be loamy, rich in organic matter, and free from chemicals and the house must be protected from predators such as ants, rats, birds, and frogs.
In snailry (snail house) it should be well-ventilated and made of wood, bamboo, concrete, or plastic depending on scale.

Breeding Stock:

It's used in mature, healthy snails for breeding. Snails are “hermaphrodites”, meaning each can lay eggs after mating. They maintain a balanced population to avoid overcrowding.

Feeding and Water:

The snails feed on fruits, vegetables, and leaves like pawpaw, cucumber, cabbage, and plantain peels. Always provide constant access to clean water, preferably in shallow dishes.

Management Practices:

They maintain proper hygiene to prevent diseases and always check regularly for egg laying and hatching. Always make sure to keep the environment moist but not waterlogged. To record the growth rate, mortality, and breeding cycles.

Economic and Technical Needs:

This is to secure a start-up capital for construction, feeding, and stock. To obtain training or guidance from agricultural extension officers or experienced farmers.

Challenges encountered in snail Farming

In Heliculture its has a faces of several challenge, which includes:

Climatic and Environmental Challenges:

Snails are sensitive to temperature and humidity; too much heat or dryness leads to dehydration and death.
In flooding it can drown snails or cause them to escape.

Predators and Pests:

Common enemies include; ants, termites, beetles, rats, frogs, snakes, and birds. They can cause serious losses if the snailry is not well-protected.

Diseases and Parasites:

The snails may suffer from bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections, especially in dirty or overcrowded pens. Proper sanitation and isolation of sick snails are essential.

Financial and Technical Problems:

Some farmers face difficulty in accessing funds for startups. Lack of technical know-how and training reduces efficiency.
While some use improper housing or poor feeding methods, affecting production.

Marketing and Storage Issues:

It's limited market awareness and poor distribution networks make it hard to sell in bulk and Lack of cold storage or processing facilities can cause spoilage.
