Explain in detail the term Fallow?
The term fallow means land that is left unplanted or uncultivated intentionally by a farmer for a long period of time for the land to become fertile. The reason for fallow is to allow the soil to recover its nutrients which during the period of fallow the farmland is left for a long time to recover.
By definition, fallow is a land that has been power and prepared for planting but intentionally left without planting any crops on it for a specific period of time. The period of leaving the land can range from months to several years to restore the soil fertility, control pests and diseases, and manage weeds
Types
Pure follow
Cover cropping fallow
Pure fallow: This is the type where no crops are planted during the period of fallow.
Cover cropping fallow: This is the type where sometimes crops are grown to improve the nutrients of the soil while preventing erosion.
What is the importance of Fallow?
Fallow allows soil fertility to restore.
Fallow helps to break the cycle of pests and disease that can accumulate with continuous cropping.
Fallow reduces weed populations.
