What is Pruning

I did not know what means pruning until I visited my grandfather one day and saw him working in garden. It was summer and despite of our beautiful garden full of green bushes and roses he still was doing some work. When I asked him what he is doing he told me pruning the rose. Only then I noticed this new word and he explained that rose is growing fast now because of all the light from sun but also rainy days recently. That is why some for the branches grown fast and tall and they take all the energy from the plant. Rose plant needs energy for buds and for new flowers that is why he is cutting off the long branches just with leaves so that flowers will have new energy.

What are the different Pruning types

There are different types of pruning:

  • cleaning: some of the bushes or trees may have dry or broken or diseased parts and they have no life and look dry, so these parts needs to be removed

  • thinning of bushes or trees in order to let more light to reach the leaves in inner part and lower part of a plant

  • raising or vertical clearance, that is when the tree has many branches in lower part of tree and that is on the way for pedestrian along streets or in garden. Therefore, they are removed to make more space and encourage the tree to raise in height

  • reduction, that means if the bush is grown quickly then it needs to be cut and brought to appropriate size, often we do with hedges

  • heading or shortening, then the heads of the bushes will be cut down that will make bush more round and bushy

  • removal partially or complete, often we need to remove the whole tree if it is diseased or broken

What are the benefits/effects of Pruning

The benefit of pruning in the garden of my grandfather I noticed the week later when I visited him again, the rose plant that she cut down did have only few roses when I was there first time. By my second visit the bus was full of roses and also green leaves. It was very bushy and looks really healthy.

I think in order to have healthy plants in garden we need to do regular pruning depending on your plants appropriate pruning type needs to be correctly chosen.
