In the past when I was hearing harvesting or harvest I imagined the situation when there were farmers who do work on big fields and planting some plants like wheat, potatoes and many different vegetables in large volume and also after hard work in spring and summer farmers will harvest the fruits of their work in autumn.
When I then was visiting my grandfather I then realised that harvesting can be not only when people do it in large volumes and sell for the big distributors or supermarkets who can sell them but also when people do have their own gardens or their own land that is used for vegetables.
In garden of my grandparents they had few apple trees, cherry trees. In summer as kids we were climbing on cherry trees and were collecting cherries in buckets. Later on my grandparents left some for us, but also gave to our friends and neighbours. The apples we collect in autumn, we tried to collect early so that they do not fall and hit themselves on ground, because then you can not store them for long time.
My grandparents prepare jams made from cherries and from apples we did apple mousse and sealed them that is why we could keep them for few months.
The other favourite vegetables that we love to collect are potatoes. Usually early in the year we plant potatoes, in autumn there are plenty of potatoes that my grandfather also have shared with his neighbours.
Autumn is the time when the neighbours exchange the vegetables and fruits that they harvested on their own land and could swap with others, that is also helpful because they do not need to plant everything but they can share with each other.
Usually after harvesting we all together with our neighbours have celebrated end of harvesting. That is my favourite time.
