HHP Cinema - Monaragala
Sri Lankan people and cinema have a special bond since the 1960s. People used to come to theaters and enjoy their favorite heroes, having a good experience. Anyhow, with the decline of quality cinema in the country, most of the halls away from main cities got closed, just like one in my hometown. HHP Cinema had been operational since I was a kid, but shut down for more than three years.
Anyhow, around 3 months back, it was started once again with t a new look, and more facilities. So, I took my wife to a movie date to watch the newest blockbuster movie, Father.
The Location
The cinema hall is located conveniently within Monaragala town, making it easy to reach. From the bus stand, we have to go around 500m along the Sirigala road, and it's just beside the main road. The area is highly crowded, being the center of the district, and has popular schools, private and government hospitals, institutions, etc. From my home, it's around 20km journey.
The Location
As you can see in the images above, it's facing the main road. There are plenty of parking spaces in front of the building for free.
On the ground floor of the building, we can see a bookstore and a convenience store as well.
This is one of the 442 Movie theaters in Sri Lanka. As you can see, the entrance is decorated with ongoing movie posters, and there is a passage to enter the hall. There are still some ongoing constructions in the premises, but from the outside, the building looks modest. The interior is clean, organized, and designed with care.
So, we went to watch the 2.30 p.m moveie. We were there around 30 minutes early as we didn't pre book sheet. We were on time, and already there was a queue to buy tickets. There was a lady in the counter, and straightaway, we could get them and had to wait a few minutes as there was a show ongoing.
Ticket Price -
- ODC - Lkr. 600(1.938 USD) for an adult, Lkr. 400(1.292 USD) for a kid
- Box - Rs. 1500(4.845 USD) per couple
Ticket prices are reasonable with the quality of the place, making it affordable to families and students.
And as you know, it's customary to have some snacks while watching a movie. So, there's a small shop with a few items. And surprisingly, they are not overpriced, just as mentioned on the cover. It's something new and satisfying in a Sri Lankan theatre. We bought a Uswatte chip (for Rs. 300/a dollar) and a Coke (for Rs. 200/ 0.7 dollar).
The sheeting arrangement
The screening hall is well maintained, with comfortable seating and clear visibility from every row. In the hall, there was no balcony option, but one hall on different levels, and in the back, there were a few box type seatings. As I see, I could count around 200 seats. The sound system is strong, and the screen quality is great with a curved setting to fully enjoy from any corner.
The Screen
It was the newest release in Sri Lanka. Father is a Sri Lankan Sinhala gangster movie directed by Chaminda Jayasuriya and produced by Dr. Shantha Geethadeva. It's based on a series of true events of the gangster Gampaha Osmond that occurred between 1976 and 1991. Poojana Dandeniya is the lead cast, along with many prominent crew members. wiki. The movie has become a blockbuster with many positive reviews.
So, the HHP cinema hall provided us with the perfect experience in watching this.
