The community spirit around St. Paul field, Bamenda
Greeting Steemit Family
Some locations hold a special place in the hearts of those who live around them. Just like schools, hospitals, and markets, playing grounds also play a vital role in building community life. For many of us, these spaces are more than just open fields. They are places where we relax, stay active, and connect after a long week of work.
For those who have been following my Sunday Diary Game, you have probably heard me mention St. Paul Field several times. As a footballer, this ground has been one of my favorite spots. It is not just a place to play football, it’s a space where friendships are built and memories are made.
The field takes its name from the St. Paul Catholic Church, which is also the rightful owner of the land. As part of its mission to support the community, the church decided to keep the field open for public use, and that simple act has had a lasting impact.
A Field That Builds Dreams
Over the years, St. Paul Field has become a true home for football lovers in Bamenda. It is not just a football pitch, it’s where many young talents have taken their first steps toward becoming professional players. Today, it serves as a training ground for about three local clubs that play in the regional league.
During the holidays, the place comes alive even more. Different competitions are organized almost every week, drawing players and fans from all parts of the city. Because of this, St. Paul Field has become one of the most popular and easily recognizable playing grounds in Bamenda. You will rarely find it empty, there is always a match in progress or about to begin.
Sunday Vibes at St. Paul Field
Sunday is definitely the busiest day here. The field is divided into sections, with different groups scheduled to play in turns. Each team gets about 2.5 hours before passing the pitch to the next team.
As part of the third group on Sundays, we usually start our match around 11:30 a.m. You can imagine the excitement as everyone gears up, ties their boots, and gets ready for another competitive and fun-filled game.
More Than Just a Field
Beyond football, St. Paul Field represents a sense of unity and belonging for the people of this community. Though the St. Paul Secondary School was the original reason for establishing the playground. The field continues to serve as a vital community space. It remains open for sports, events, and social activities, keeping the spirit of togetherness alive.
A big thank you goes to St. Paul Catholic Church for keeping this place available to everyone. For many of us, St. Paul Field is not just a football pitch, it’s a part of who we are.

Very interesting. Every footballer or fans wouldn't skipped this post. I understood such setting like having a major pitch in the community where everyone trains or hold important matches.
The field is big, but i do not know if nothing can be done to plant grasses. The pitch looks rough which i cannot tell the numbers of injuries players might have been sustaining during trainings and matches.
There was a time we needed to replant grasses to make our playing ground a field, other than it being a pitch, we decided it into two, while planting on one side, we were training on the other. We ensured that the grasses grew to an extent, then we stop playing there for months until the whole pitch was grassy. After that, the numbers of injured players reduced drastically.
