PRINCIPLES: ‘A Good Name Is Better Than Great Wealth’

A GOOD name or reputation is so valuable that it is legally protected in some countries. This may include protection against defamation (a defamatory statement or slander) and defamation (an oral defamation statement). This is reminiscent of the old proverb:

"A good name is more to choose than a great wealth, to have respect is better than silver and gold." (Proverbs 22: 1) How can we both deserve a good name and the respect of others? ?

Excellent suggestions can be found in the Bible.*

For example, consider what the Bible says in Psalm 15. To the question: "Who may be a guest in [God's tent]?" Wrote the psalmist: "The one who is ... to practice what is right and to speak the truth in his heart, he does not slander ... He does not hurt his neighbor, and he does not defame his friends, he rejects everyone He who is contemptible ... He does not go back on his promise, even if it is bad for him ... Another quality that contributes to respect is humility. "There is humility before glory," says Proverbs 15:33. Remember, humble people see where they can make improvements and work hard. Besides, they are willing to apologize for offending someone. (James 3: 2) The proud are not like that, but attack quickly. "Pride is about a crash, and a haughty mind before he stumbles," Proverbs 16:18 says.

But what if someone lubricates your good name? Should you react hastily, perhaps in the heat of rage? Ask yourself, "If I try to defend my name, will I actually expose myself more to the lie?" Although legal action is sometimes appropriate, the Bible gives this wise advice:

"Do not rush into litigation." Rather, "plead your case with your neighbor." (Proverbs 25: 8, 9) This more careful approach can also save you expensive legal costs.

The Bible is much more than a book about religion. It is a trusted guide to life. Those who use their wisdom cultivate qualities that deserve deep respect and contribute to a good name.
