What if your Steem posts could breathe?

That is the idea behind SteemBiota — a decentralised life simulation built entirely on top of the Steem blockchain, running in your browser with no downloads, no servers, and no middlemen. Every creature born, every meal shared, every new species that branches off from its ancestor — all of it is written permanently on-chain, word by word, block by block, forever.

🐾 What Is SteemBiota?

SteemBiota is an on-chain ecosystem where digital organisms called creatures live, grow, and evolve. Each creature is generated from a compact genome — a set of traits that determines its body shape, colouring, lifespan, and fertility window. That genome is published to Steem via Keychain and becomes immutable the moment it lands in a block. Nobody, not even the creator, can change it afterwards.

The creatures are painted procedurally as canvas images directly in the browser. Feed the same genome to any client anywhere in the world and you get the same painting, pixel for pixel. This is determinism at work.

Once alive, a creature goes through a full lifecycle measured in real days:

🍖 Feed it to slow its aging
🎮 Play with it to earn XP
🚶 Walk it across the map
💞 Breed it with another creature to produce offspring — and potentially trigger a speciation event, creating an entirely new genus on the chain
🪦 When its time comes, it is fossilised — a permanent record in the blockchain's fossil log

Every one of those interactions is a Steem reply. The blockchain itself becomes the ecosystem's fossil record, readable by anyone, censored by no one.

👗 Accessories — Dress Your Creature

Beyond creatures, SteemBiota includes a full Accessory system. Users can procedurally generate wearable items — hats, capes, pendants, wings, lockets — publish them on-chain, and equip them on any creature they own. Accessories are NFTs in their own right, transferable between owners using the same two-sided handshake protocol used by creatures.

Ownership of accessories is tracked by the same tamper-evident state machine that tracks creatures, so there is no ambiguity about who owns what.

🔗 Genuine NFTs — Ownership That Means Something

SteemBiota treats every creature and accessory as a non-fungible token identified by its author/permlink key on Steem. Ownership is tracked by a Global State Machine — a single cryptographically verifiable record of who owns every NFT at any point in history.

Transferring a creature is not just changing a number in a database. It requires an on-chain offer from the current owner and an on-chain acceptance from the recipient. No one can dump a creature on you without your consent.

Snapshots of the state machine are pinned to IPFS and anchored on-chain as checkpoints. Every snapshot is verified against a SHA-256 hash before the app trusts it, so a tampered file is detected and rejected automatically.

🧬 Provenance — Every Creature Has a Story

SteemBiota takes copy detection seriously. Each creature carries a provenance badge that tells the community its history at a glance:

🧬 Bred	A legitimately bred offspring with verified parents
⚡ Speciation	A bred offspring that created a new genus
⚠ Duplicate	An identical genome was posted earlier
⚠ Unverified Origin	Suspicious trait combination
👻 Phantom	The post was deleted from chain
🌿 Severed Lineage	An ancestor was a Phantom

You can always trace a creature's lineage back to its original founder. The blockchain never forgets.

🏆 User Ranks & Leaderboard

Participation earns XP — feed creatures, breed offspring, contribute new genera, upvote community creatures. XP unlocks ranks from 🌿 Wanderer all the way up to 🌳 Progenitor for the most devoted ecosystem builders. A live leaderboard tracks standings across all participants.
