Rick and Morty is an animated series for adults created by americans Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. The story revolves around Rick Sanchez, a human scientist with superior intelligence to the rest of the species in the universe.

In fact, it is one of the most intelligent beings in an entire Multiverse, which means that it not only surpasses other species, but also surpasses itself along an infinity of dimensions.

Rick is this ruthless scientist who, you can tell by miles, has had to learn some of the crudest truths in the world. The character is inspired by Dr Brown from Back to the future.

Dr Emmet "Doc" Brown

But Rick has a dark, murky and mysterious nuance: He drinks constantly, do drugs occasionally, destroys everyones motivation, has the hability to literally change anything he doesnt like or aprove, and people think he is like a god, able to manipulate any single thing that crosses his mind. it is not known exactly what happened to him in the past that made him such a nihilistic jerk.

In fact, there is no certainty about none the characters that appear on the show, because any of them could easily be copies or clones of the original versions of themselves. Isn't it something dangeorusly knowable? To know if you're authentic or just a copy of someone you're not?...

So it happens to Beth, daughter of Rick and Morty's mother, who has an identity crisis when she suspects or rather contemplates the possibility of being a clone.

Beth, Ricks daughter

But it is clear that something happened with this man, who after 10 years of abandonment, returns with his daughter and her family. Thus begins the series, with the return of Rick to the life of his daughter and, therefore, of her family. thats were Jerry, her husband, detests Rick and his influence in the house, appears. And Summer, Morty's older sister, only engaged at the begining in young teenager things like being popular or conquering some cool boy,.

The second name of the title, Morty, is the grandson of Rick who accompanies him in each episode through in-dimensional trips, at first his main concerns are Jessica, a classmate he is in love with, and his parents. He will often have to deal with such remote and disparate matters that he will end up developing a worldview very similar to that of his grandfather, where:

Nobody exists on purpose. Everyone is going to die. Nobody belongs anywhere. Come watch TV.

Lessons maybe a bit premature for a 13 year old teenager.

Between these two characters the show will be developing two fundamentally different perspectives: The romanticism of Morty, which pushes him to believe in human values to do the right thing; and Rick's nihilism, which will try to show him the harsh reality of issues such as love, marriage, society, and others.

The irony of the matter is that it is Morty, and not his grandfather, the voice of conscience between them. Although, in one way or another, Rick always ends up being right.

The satirical and ironic tone of the series is truly unique, as it is the interaction it has with its viewers.

Throughout the series you get the feeling that the characters really exist in an alternate universe, and that each episode is just a litlle selected part of their aventures, seeing the characters make allusion to events that happened between episodes.

Rick and Morty has an absolutely original structural richness. Each episode persists during the development of the following. Events often occur that make us believe in moments: "the season / series is over" or "it will not be the same again" only to discover that Rick devised some ingenious way to make nothing change significantly.

Rick the original (?)

The events that occur around this personage are impressive. He is a scientist persecuted by extraterrestrial races that want to steal his invention, a formula to create dark matter. It also has a political past somewhat compromised, apparently belonged to some kind of terrorist network. When nobody comes looking for problems, he also manages to find his own, Why? Who knows, maybe to deal with boredom.

Pickle Rick
It is curious how the creators make the perspectives of each character interact, to leave at the end of each episode something like a sense of life, an important lesson not to succumb to the conflicts that suppose to exist.

Actually the series transmits a good amount of messages that call to reflect on issues such as marriage from the parents of morty, adolescence in school, religion, politics, television, altruism, are all subjects portrayed in the framework of the absurdity of existence.

That's why I focused on the philosophical aspects of the series, and not so much on the comic. Yes there are some epic hilarious episodes, but when you look at it as a whole, its a magnificent story with an incredible plot.

R&M is not a series for intelligent people. It's rather that it makes you feel a bit silly, why?

Although sometimes it does not seem like it, thanks to Rick, the series actually shows a hopeful life perspective, highlight the powerful effect of recognizing the remote possibility and insignificance of existing, transforming it into something meaningfull through the identification of the human being with his individuality.

But then, Rick gets on stage and shits on all that and starts doing whatever the fuck he wants because he can. So all these messages you related with during the episode get smashed with his akwardly accurate comentaries. That's why.

I have to say that Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland portrayed the issue of depression really well with Rick's traits... What they are saying is something like "If god existed, he would be a depressed old scientific man" The ideas that we usually relate to a depressed emotional state are difficulties to distinguish fantasy from reality and lack of meaning, motivation and self control.

Fun fact, a fan once asked Dan Harmon how to deal with depression. And the response was as unexpected as it was brilliant:

He wrote: “For One: Admit and accept that it’s happening. Awareness is everything. We put ourselves under so much pressure to feel good. It’s okay to feel bad. It might be something you’re good at! Communicate it. DO NOT KEEP IT SECRET. Own it. Like a hat or jacket. Your feelings are real.

“Two: try to remind yourself, over and over, that feelings are real but they aren’t reality. Example: you can feel like life means nothing. True feeling. Important feeling. TRUE that you feel it, BUT…whether life has meaning? Not up to us. Facts and feelings: equal but different.”

Continuing his message of support, Harmon wrote in two more tweets: “The most important thing I can say to you is please don’t deal with it alone. There is an incredible, miraculous magic to pushing your feelings out. Even writing “I want to die” on a piece of paper and burning it will feel better than thinking about it alone. Output is magical. Dark thoughts will echo off the walls of your skull, they will distort and magnify. When you open your mouth (or an anonymous journal or blog or sketchpad), these thoughts go out. They’ll be back but you gotta get em OUT. Vent them. Tap them. I know you don’t want to but try it.”
