Digg co-founder Kevin Rose announced via Twitter on Saturday that he had signed up for Steemit.

Steemit.com "is in the same vein as my ideas on rebuilding digg as crypto rewards platform," said Rose, whose account, @krose, went live Saturday evening.

As a successful American tech entrepreneur that pioneered the Web 2.0 paradigm that has dominated Internet usage for the past decade, Rose's arrival to Steemit is part of a larger trend of early Internet enterpreneurs looking to cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies as the next evolution of the social Web.

Billionaire investor and Internet pioneer Mark Cuban is throwing his weight behind the development of the Mercury Protocol. The Mercury Protocol states on its site that is "an open-source project for communication platforms to utilize decentralized blockchain technology at minimal cost." The project is being built on top of the Ethereum ecosystem.

Naval Ravikant, CEO and co-founder of AngelList, is reportedly sponsoring prizes for the development of the decentralized microblogging services on the Blockstack ecosystem.

Rose's work on [Digg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digg?oldformat=true was a huge influence on my early thinking and experimentation with social media as a marketing and information gathering tool. Digg played a role in mine and @alexlinebrink's old band's social media strategy in 2008 and 2009. And prior to Facebook's dominance, Digg was an important way for me as a writer and reporter to find and promote stories.

So, as a long time fan and beneficiary of his genius, let me be one of the first to say, "Welcome to Steemit, @krose!" I've already followed your account, and I'm looking forward to reading your posts.

Thank you for reading,

- Josh
