I was actually thinking of investigating a little bit and posting a guide about this .. When I do, I will let you know.
In short, following a curation trail is good when you have no time curating, so you find a good curator (such as steemstem, curie, sndbox etc etc) and you can always set limitations (via steemauto) like no votes if your VP is less then X.
