A ₦210,000 Lesson I Won't Forget
Four days ago, I was assigned to escort a truck carrying bags of methionine to a customer's warehouse. It was a cold, rainy day, and the wet roads made the journey even more challenging. As a depot officer, my responsibility is to ensure that every bag reaches its destination safely, and I take that duty seriously.
Despite the rain, everything was going smoothly. We had almost arrived at the customer's warehouse when the unexpected happened.
Just a short distance from our destination, one of the bags somehow fell off the truck. To this day, I honestly cannot explain how it happened. Before anyone could react, the bag burst open on the wet road, and the methionine spilled everywhere. Watching the rain soak into a product worth over ₦210,000 (Two Hundred and Ten Thousand Naira) was heartbreaking.
What hurt even more was what came afterward.
I was blamed for the loss.
Deep down, both I and the company knew this was one of those unfortunate incidents that can happen during transportation despite every precaution. Sometimes, no matter how careful you are, life still throws unexpected challenges your way.
That experience reminded me that not every outcome is within our control. We can give our best, follow procedures, and stay committed to our responsibilities, yet still find ourselves taking the blame for something we neither intended nor could have prevented.
Thankfully, no one was injured, and that's what matters most. Goods can be replaced, but lives cannot.
Although that rainy day was frustrating and emotionally draining, I chose to see it as another lesson in responsibility, resilience, and the unpredictable nature of life. Every challenge teaches us something if we're willing to learn from it.
Have you ever been blamed for something that was completely beyond your control? I'd love to hear your experience in the comments.
