You don't have sit and wait for the 30 min to expire. You have 7 days to to upvote a post. Waiting 6 days will give the the best chance to see if it's a good investment. Nice post samstonehillm
You are right. However you only make curation rewards with the people who vote AFTER you. So if you wait 6 days you are unlikely to catch much steem. This is why 30mins is the optimum time.
