During the first 30 min of post's lifetime curators share their rewards with the author. In the first 5 or so minutes almost all payout goes to the author, around 15th minute it's about 50:50, and close to the end of the period curators retain most of the payout. This rule was implemented halfway down the road, the guides suggesting to vote as soon as possible are simply older ones.
