Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appeared likely to miss a majority in the lower house of the Indian parliament, the Lok Sabha, with 272 seats as the counting continued on Tuesday. The BJP was still expected to secure a majority with its allies. More than 200 seats were predicted to be won by the opposition INDIA alliance, which is led by the Indian National Congress party.

These results are in stark contrast to those of 2019, when the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), secured 353 seats, with the BJP securing 303 of those seats by itself.
