Contest For Steemit Frontend. Content Discovery In Steemit - 100% Upvote. Total 3K Bounties Available

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Utopian.io rewards Open Source contributors for their hard work. We have quite a few bounties available if you did not notice and many many things going on.

There is a LOT of demand regarding Content Discovery on the Steemit frontend. Many users complaining about the Trending page becoming useless. Lets fix that!

We are proposing a 100% Utopian Bot Upvote bounty for the designer/s and developer/s who can create the best working solution to fix the trending page on steemit/condenser. Plus Utopian is running quite a few development streams you could be interested in, for a total of 3K bounties to be delivered.

Steemit Trending Page

If you look at the trending page you will most likely see the same contents over and over, simply because the more SP you have the more likely you will be there. There are accounts who follow different threads, others focused on the same thread, therefore making the Trending page not appealing for readers having different interests.

Lets Fix The Trending Page

Utopian.io is running this contest to find designer/s and developer/s willing to provide a working solution to make content discovery on the trending page easier and more appealing.

The winners will receive a 100% Utopian Upvote, worth more than $300.

Utopian is for collaboration, so if you are going to work on this with more people, post one contribution only for the design and one contribution only for the development, then split the rewards and mention the people involved.

If You Win

The Utopian upvote is not about having only a big reward but it is also about going to the trending and show your work to the big Steemit community. The reward is a small portion of the benefit you are going to have on the long run if you win this contest.

Rules

  • If you are willing to participate to the contest, write in the comments your profession and what you are willing to do. We want to promote collaboration.

  • Only push your contribution in Utopian once the work is done. For the design means when the layout is ready, for the development when the PR is submitted. We cannot guarantee the PR will be merged but it is up to you to convince the Steemit team to do so ( @sneak could be the right guy to ask for some suggestions ).

  • Once done place a comment about the work completed in this post.

Ready? GO!

3K Bounties in Total

I'm a software developer mainly using SQL, Java, Oracle, and JSPs.

As a hobby, I use bootstrap, javascript, and jquery. i'm also familiar with python but prefer javascript because of node.js and npm. i also am familiar with mongodb and have used it to build an inventory system.

I'm interested in working on the Trending Page but need a front-end designer for the UX.

One of my solutions was is regard to voting bots and promoted posts....Why not put the posts which have paid for bots to upvote them into Promoted, and leave the hot page as organic.....Better yet, let's incorporate eyeballs and comments into organic trending...

Bot users will find out how to obfuscate bid process. You see, bid bot users pay for the first page at organic hot or trending.
They are not interested in fenced page otherwise they would use promotion.

And market will fill this need eventually.

markets and organic quality are two different things.

i'm just telling you what will happen. You can't fight the market by prohibitive and restrictive measures.

it's not prohibitive. It's not restrictive. It's called filtering.

We can do filtering, but we'll have to work within the market context. Filtering vote bots won't work unless we can identify vote buying efficiently.

With the current system this would have to be very crude. However SMTs and communities might make that easier.

I like the idea of separating (bid)bot votes out, super interesting to think how that shake things up!

This is noted.

@stellabelle, I have been following you for some time now since I joined steemit.com last October this year. I even saw that sort of parody video of yours regarding Steemit being uploaded on YouTube. Have read some of your written publications on Medium as well.

And I tend to be in alignment in your key ideas regarding some of the most critical aspects governing the Steem community including the creation of an AI overseer that is not easily threatened by Whales. #makesteemitgreatagain

Yes, Let's make an AI responsible for dealing with abusive whales....yeah, I am still for that idea..

I will help you in any way possible, even just for support. I can do some design stuff..let me know how I can help you.

Hello @stellabelle. Thank you. Yes, actually a layout design will do. Which things go on the right and which things go on the left.

My thought here is "before I even click that 'trending' text, what am I expecting to see?" And then just 'wow me' - that sort of thing.

Another approach is, to minimize clutter. Remove what shouldn't be there. I'll create a github page for this and put suggestions there for organizational purposes.

Yes, i really like your work so far, and I am def. a fan. Maybe ask fabiyamada for design work as she's very good and fast too

Thank you, Leah. I'll get in touch with fabiyamada.

Also, let me just say 'thank you' for leading me to @paulag. Your post Did You Know You Are Mining STEEM With Your Mind? led me to the group and just felt right.

oh, great. I didn't know that. Thanks for letting me know. I like your attention to detail and high quality contributions.

I can create UX, I use html, css and css3, can i use you as your team

Here is my proposed solution: https://steemit.com/utopian-io/@sirrius/proposed-new-section-method-for-seggregating-posts-starting-with-the-trending-page

I think that the problem with the trending page is not so much about the layout, but about content diversity and discoverability. I give far more details and layout adjustments ideas in my post.
What do you think?

Nice contest! I think it is a strong concept this Utopian especially with the way the rewards are structured.

Let's Fix The Trending Page

Let's Fix The Trending Page

Let's Fix The Trending Page

Nice

What are the requirements for the design?

You made the requirements as long as you can come up with a good UX solution. But I would advise to this in collab with a frontend dev to understand the feasibility

I see, thanks!

Maybe fix promoted while y'all awesome people are at it :) paying for promotion should put posts in the trending or hot pages depending on size of promotion payment. This would reduce demand for voting bots

I like your thinking here!

Your comment was downvoted by @miti on its content.. but don't worry because at this time I used only a small portion of my Steem Power percentage as a warning.

To write comment for asking vote for vote OR follow for follow is considered spam in Steemit community. I also suggest you to read Steemit etiquette carefully before you hurt your reputation.
If you keep tryin' and don't stop writing that kind of comments, I am forced to increase my Steem Power percentage to downvote your spam comments, hurting your reputation too.
I'm not a BOT and my aim is to clear posts by trolls and spammers.

Great job with this platform that empowers developers

Vote me And i Will Vote You Help For Help

I have an idea for Content Discovery that doesn't involve the trending page directly but rather a way to funnel the kind of trending material you would want into your feed.

What if you create Focused resteem service based on different topics. Ok you are probably already about to leave hearing the word resteem, but just listen for a bit.

The problem today if you follow a resteeming service is that everything that is sent there get resteemed. That means number 1 it's A LOT of post that will drown your feed. Number 2 you are perhaps interested in only 2 percent of the topics posted there.

This creates a problem where people pay to have their post resteemed and the promise of exposure to thousand of followers. The fact is that it's probably only a few hundreds of real people that might possibly see the post and they are probably going to be in the same boat as you hoping to be found by someone a little bit higher up in the Steemit ecosystem.

So let's see how it might look if a focused Resteemed service is made. Lets make an example. Resteem Focused Steemit.
So the rule is that everyone can send in their post if they think It is good enough. The cost would be 1 Steem dollar. Each day only 5 people are choosen and resteemed. This means that you might pay 1 SBD but not get resteemed, but if your content is good it can be choosen and resteemed.

Now hopefully there will be a lot of people following Focused resteem Steemit. Because they are interested in this topic and they want to see the best content themed Steemit, which is unbiased of how much SP the person has that wrote the post, but instead it's based on the quality of the content.

OCD is already doing a great job to find and bring up good content to the Surface. However, the content is mixed and not focused. And thus we might not want to follow it.

With this kind of set up u could choose to follow a theme based account that will funnel the kind of material you want to your feed while in the same time it allows fish of all sizes to swim onto your feed as long as the material is good.

I like your thinking!

I think some communities (or content hub accounts) do resteem winning/best articles - I think these accounts will be fighting over being the 'go to's' in time, if they are not already doing so :)

You are right soon enough people will realize the benefit of doing this themselves and make specific accounts for it

First of all, this is a very good initiative and demand of the most steemit users. Following is just my idea, not an implementation plan:

Trending algorithm can be improved by implementing different upvote options other than reward/flag such as like, dislike, controversial, innovative etc. Also, filters can be used to find trending posts based on those parameters (vote options), similar to reddit's controversial such as the most liked, disliked, controversial, funny. A single criteria may not suffice all the needs of the users.

A blockchain solution can be possible for the above idea. For example, a fixed 1 cent vote for like/great/happy/funny, negative 0.05 cent for dislike/anger/sad, 1 cent for controversial/neutral. A user will have 10/20/30 (perhaps assigned to him/her based on reputation) such votes per daily regardless of SP they hold.

People sometimes do not vote even if they like the content due to limit of their vote power (VP) or already exhausted VP. But with these extra VP, posts can be discovered in numerous algorithmic ways using ML/AI, such as most liked, disliked, funny or controversial post.

I am not sure how other than blockchain similar voting options without any reward that can be implemented.

Kudos to future developers :)

that sounds good!!! I like it!:D

Vote me And i Will Vote You Help For Help

sorry I don't do that vote for vote, follow for follow thing, plus, I'm not here to win, just to provide my idea.
