Things YOU can do to save species from becoming extinct.
Things you can do to stop species from becoming extinct.
While we are busy going on with our day to day activities, our biodiversity is being severely threatened and thousands of species are at the brink of extinction. We do this without the intention to risk biodiversity, but more often than not it is difficult to see the direct connections between what we are doing and its effects downstream. With some little efforts to change certain habits, we can reduce the impact on biodiversity. Some of the things we can do which can be of help to reduce our impact on the environment and help save biodiversity include;
- Reduce your energy demand
- Avoid or eliminate pesticides and fertilizers. Composting will provide natural fertilizer for your flower or vegetable garden, and will overall reduce waste stream and also the need for landfill space
- Reduce, reuse and recycles. These will greatly reduce the amount of pollution that is greatly affecting biodiversity
- Restore habitat in your yard. Plant trees and flowers and keep your home green.
- Restore habitat in your community. If you don’t have a yard, consider volunteering for a community habitat restoration project or plant trees and flowers in your community.
- Volunteer by joining an ecological restoration active group in your area. By doing this you can possibly help restore habitat hosting endemic species and eliminate invasive species
- Help Native Pollinators and most especially the bees. Pollinators, are the key to reproduction for most flowering plants which are foundational to the survival of many species on our planet. You can do this by planting flowers around your home, stop the use of pesticides and generally reducing your carbon footprint.
- Reduce invasive species
- Buy locally grown food and most especially organic foods
- Connect with nature. Spend more time in nature that with gadgets.
- Share knowledge both scientific and traditional about the biodiversity of your area
- Support community efforts in biodiversity conservation
- Advocate for biodiversity conservation. To do this you need to learn about the importance of biodiversity and then become an advocate for biodiversity conservation
- Be part of the decision making process to conserve biodiversity and involve stakeholders of all levels and enact strong laws and policies.
- Donate to biodiversity conservation organizations and projects
