Identifying star patterns #1 (Let's learn series #3 : Astronomy)
A star speckled night sky filled the minds of men with awe, not only in the past but also at present. From the ancient time, man has observed stars and planets appearing in the night sky and he has come up with various theories about them. Accordingly, astronomy can be considered as the oldest science in the world.
To learn astronomy, you must get to know the star patterns.
What are star patterns?
The imaginary pictures built up by joining stars in the night sky are known as Star patterns which are also known as Constellations.
Orion
This can be seen in the months of February and March around 8.00 pm. This constellation is like a hunter. It has seven bright stars. The stars at the two shoulders and the stars at the knees appears as a square. The belt is made up of three bright stars. Three stars which are not very bright indicates its head. Three less bright stars near the belt indicates the case of the sword.
This constellation helps to identify the North direction since it's head is directed towards the North direction. The Betelguse star which indicate the right shoulder is a red giant star. Rigel is a blue star which indicates the left leg.
Gemini
The two people are used to be twins. Castor and Pollux are the stars which indicate the heads of the twins. Castor indicates the head of the person in the right side while Pollux stands as the head of the left person.
Canis major
The brightest star in the sky, Sirius is in this constellation.
Taurus
You will see a group of stars in the shape of 'V'. This depicts the head of an ox. The bright red star is named as Aldebran or Alpha Centauri which indicates an eye of the ox.
Pleides
If you take a closer look, you will see a group of attractive stars called Pleiades. This constellation consists of more than 200 less bright stars. But only 9 stars can be seen with the naked eye. Tori is the brightest of this group of stars.
That's it for now.

I have always wondered how people of early ages thought of stars.
Some thought of them as path finder, while some thought of them as signs for bad or good things.
I also heard that it indicates the horoscope of people.
Seriously, astronomy is a great thing to be interested at. :D
Yeah I have posted about the history of astronomy in this post. https://steemit.com/science/@chamudiliyanage/let-s-learn-astronomy
And look forward for my post about the Zodiac which the horoscope is made from
Yeah.. I will do so.
If I am interested in anything from childhood, it's Space.
Haha I have a crazy friend like you who'll die to learn and hear about space :D
Haha.. Glad to hear that. Is he/she on Steemit ?
"Looking at starry sky with a continuous blow of chilling and refreshing wind at night"
It used to be my Habbit.
Now I never get a chance to do so for various reasons.
Thinking about stars, spaces, black holes, galaxies; Those thoughts would envelope me within a moment.
Miss those days.
Oops. My bad. XD
I miss those nights.
No she's not on steemit.
Well you can spend a whole night looking at the stars.
It feels so sad and also great to remember those times. Isn't it?
I hope that you'll have some time to live like the old days :D
Ah. That's too bad. I would have loved to see someone with the same obligation to learn about space as me.
I once wanted to become an Astronaut.
But that dream is not affordable.
Yeah.. I even used radium Star wall sticker on my ceiling so that I can enjoy the darkness this way.
Oh that's so sad to hear.
Haha that's so cool.
Keep loving the space and you'll reach the space one day. But don't forget to love the earth. 😂😂
