In my previous post "Ladakh-The Land of Passes", I mentioned the famous passes of Ladakh, but didn't write anything about those passes. In my today's post, I am going to give a brief description of two most famous and highest passes of Ladakh i. e; Khardung La and Chang La.

Khardung La is a mountain pass in the Ladakh region of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Khardung La is believed to be the highest motorable pass in the world. At elevation5,359 m (17,582 ft), Khardung La makes one feel on the top of the world. It is about 39.7 km from Leh.

This mountain pass was prepared for motors in 1976 and opened in 1988 for the public. It acts as a gateway to Nubra and Shyok Valleys. The mountain pass holds a special significance as it is the way to carry supplies to the famous Siachen Glacier which lies on the north of Leh and about 40 Kms away by road to the Nubra valley.

The scenic beauty one sees all around and the feeling of being on top of the world makes Khardung La a very popular tourist attraction. But for some people travelling through the altitude can be difficult as the air becomes thin and breathing can get difficult.

Chang La

The Chang La is a high mountain pass in Ladakh. It is claimed to be the second highest motorable road in the world. At elevation of 5,360 m or 17,590 ft, Chang La is claimed to be the second highest motorable road in the world. The pass is covered with snow throughout the year.

Located on the 134 km-long road between the Pangong Lake and Leh, the Chang La Pass is the main gateway for the Changthang Plateau situated in the Himalayas.

Some of the places to see around Chang La pass are the Pangong lake, Nubra valley, Tso Moriri lake and Hermis Gompa.Though the Changla Pass has extreme cold and chilly winds that can blow you away, the breathtaking views from this region leave any visitor speechless and will be a memorable adventure trip.
