Welcome to Anumün! - A Sneak Peak at the literature of the Green Splinter

in #steemmonsters6 years ago (edited)

Would you like a taste of real Steem Monsters lore? Then take a bite of this post...

For the last few weeks, I've been fully absorbed in the creation of a world.

Fun With (3).png

#SteemMonsters has presented the ultimate challenge to my writing.

Sheer, unbridled creativity is the only way... and that's exactly what I've been throwing at it. I don't even know how deep the rabbit hole goes. Let's find out together.

@CarrieAllen and I were the only two members of the victorious Green team C in the epic Splinter Writing Contest sponsored by Steem Monsters. The amazing level of competition drove us both to higher heights. We both thrive on competition, and I in particular had no intention of losing this contest.

I won't go into too great of detail about how much I love Steem Monsters, but...

Steem Monsters is the most amazing thing I've yet seen from Steem... and Steem has shown me some pretty incredible things. @Aggroed and @yabapmatt have blown everybody away with the swift and successful creation of this amazing... I wanna say "game" but it's so much more than that. Everyone on their development team has done an extraordinary job every step of the way, and they've only just begun. JOIN US.

Now here's some highlights from Anumün, the Green Splinter...

The very first thing I did was draw this map... It was extremely helpful.

Kill a Unicorn and You'll be Sorry - from the Gobble-de-Book

"There has only been one Unicorn killing in the recorded history of Anumün. Grimp Zordelbuff, an overzealous Goblin raider felled a Unicorn with a crossbow before his mates could stop him. The sky was instantly darkened and lightning filled the air. The earth yawned and shook; a chasm suddenly opened, swallowing the entire raider party and the dead Unicorn, then closing up around them. No one ever killed a Unicorn again."

How to Kill a Rexxie - from The Minotaur Scoutbook

"The Humans will tell you that Rexxie cannot be killed, but you must not believe their lies. A Minotaur host of merely thirty can make quick work of a single Rexxie, though four or five Minotaurs will assuredly be lost.

  1. Surround the Rexxie, crawling in from all sides slowly and quietly.
  2. Position the host in multiple perimeters around the Beast.
  3. Create a commotion of noise from the outer perimeter (Spears against shields works nicely).
  4. When the Rexxie runs, the closest Minotaurs must attack its legs with special Rexxie-tooth spearheads.
  5. Timing is crucial, as the first wounds will disorient the Beast.
  6. Before the Rexxie decides which way to run, it must be attacked in full force
Remember: Kill a Rexxie, feed the clan for a month… fail to kill a Rexxie, everybody dies."

Weapons - from The Seedling Rhymes (a nursery rhyme)

"What Rexxies tear with tooth and claw the Orcs shall cleave with stone,
While Minotaurs make handles for their spears from Rexxie’s bone.
The Centaur arrow’s deadly flight shall always find its mark,
And Goblin-grown explosions can shoot fire from a spark.
Broadswords, bows and knives of Men shall only kill for food;
The Unicorns shall never slay, but cannot be subdued.
When Goblins of the Western Wood shoot lightning from their hands,
The Southern Swamps absorb the strongest Magic in the lands.
Weapons are but tools, as diverse as Anumün,
They cleave and kill, they slash and burn, but peace is coming soon."

Fantastic Beasts

These are just a few of them...

ARMOURED GRASSBRONK

This extremely thick-skinned cow-like mammal seems to exist for the sole purpose of providing food for the Rexxies. Other than Rexxie’s bite, only the finest Minotaur spears and blades can pierce the flesh of the Grassbronk. Ironically, the Minotaurs make their finest blades from Rexxie teeth.

RAZOR-FANG FIREFLY

Born in the moist Grasses near the edge of the Primordic Ocean, these luminescent insects are a valuable asset to the entire Splinter. Feeding off pollen, the Fireflies grow large and scatter. They are used as a near-universal lighting source throughout Anumün.

TOWER VULTURES

These Vultures are quick to clean up any mess in the Mountains. Perpetually roosting atop the Magi Tower, their amazingly keen eyesight can spot carrion from miles away. When hungry, the Vultures have been known to attack prey that is still living. The Tower Vultures drink exclusively from the River of Power.

TRACKOLOPE

The Trakolope travel in smaller herds, or tracks. They follow extremely reliable grazing patterns.Their delicate fur is used to make high-end Goblin clothing, which is mostly traded out of the Splinter.

The Tragedy of the Swamp Thing

307 A.S. - Claudius Greenforth, the most promising summoner, destined to become the next Magi, is tragically overtaken by the Swamps of the Living Moss. As he is being dragged under, the Magi of the Forest (his master) casts spells wildly in an attempt to save the young summoner. Though the Magi is unsuccessful, Greenforth is transformed by the magic of the swamps. He becomes the Swamp Thing: A prisoner of the Living Moss, but powerful in magic.

POPPYPOOF

Poppies grow in the Fields of Finkeldei, protected by the Unicorns. The drug they produce, PoppyPoof, is used recreationally and as a painkiller throughout Anumün.

“Poppypoof! Poppypoof! Chopped off your hand?
Poppypoof kills all the pain in the land!”

-excerpt from The Seedling Rhymes

Goblo-Centrism - from the Gobble-dee-Book

“Goblins are the chosen and the Humans are quite wrong,
The Spirit placed us Willingly, and willing we belong.
For once the Prophecy is filled, then Gobson will be strong,
And tales of Goblin Glories will abound out loud in song.”

FireFly Lanterns - from Maglar’s Living Anumün

"The industrialization of the Fireflies has come to be the most useful innovation in all Anumün. In Lyveria, The Fireflies are kept in elaborate lanterns and used for their nightly glow. In some of the smaller settlements, people have discovered that these Fireflies can be kept as pets. Their bite is incredibly painful, but once they’re trained (and properly coaxed), they provide perfectly convenient light whenever it is needed. The Goblin Sorcerers of the Western Wood constantly advocate for the freedom of the Fireflies, arguing that their cruel treatment is unnecessary and that Magic can create what light is needed."

“Anumün, I sing to thee! The savage, simple, wild and free

The Tree that is, the Seed that was, the Spirit Great as what She does”

This is all absolutely amazing! Green Splinter is low key my personal favorite (I have the green splinter banners/dividers on all my music posts). To say you guys did it justice is a complete understatement. This is further than I ever thought it could go (which is why I'll stick to music scoring). Phenomenal job!

Thanks a lot! :D I haven't had a chance to listen to a lot of the musical stuff yet, but I'll get on it!
I've been really itching to share some of this stuff. And we had multiple authors working on each Splinter... so many great ideas, it's gonna be fantastic!

Dude it's so exciting seeing this stuff coming together. All the teams are killin' it.

And yeah man, anytime! It's all posted on my blog. I link all previous musical works at the bottom of each post so you can kinda follow them. I can't wait to start scoring for each individual splinter too, getting their characteristics and cultures reflected in music form. Gonna be so cool!

Is that a map of Colorado up top? LoL cool stuff man<3

Very cool! Lovin that map bro!

Thanks! I really enjoy making fantasy maps, but the opportunity so rarely arises... ;)
The map fueled the whole thing for me and Carrie.
