Science at home! Fun homemade experiments for the little ones. Let's continue learning about the Refraction of Light!
Before starting the experiment it is necessary that we review a concept with which we will work so that the children understand what we are doing.
What is the refraction of light?
The refraction of light is the change of direction of the light rays that happens after passing these from one medium to another in which the light propagates with different speed. Source
Materials:
Two glass cups preferably
Water
A coin
Procedures of the First Part! We can visualize the currency!
- First we put the coin in the center of the container and then add water. By lowering the position of the eyes and looking from the side of the container we can see the coin without any difficulty.
Procedures of the Second Part! The coin disappears!
- Then we repeated the experiment but placing the coin under the container with water. In this case, when adding water and looking from the same position, the coin disappears before our eyes
What happened?
We see the coin when the rays of light reflected on the surface of the coin reach our eyes.
When we put the coin under the container with water the rays reflected in the coin are diverted when changing medium (when passing from glass to water or water to air) and, looking from the side of the container, no ray can reach our eyes and we can not see the coin. This deviation of light is called refraction.
If we look from above we will see the coin without any difficulty since the light that strikes perpendicularly to the separation surface of two media does not suffer deviation.
