How do we know we're learning from the right teacher? Sometimes you might be fooled by someone's confidence to believe they are wise.

I have recently become a parent and I was terrified of being a rubbish one. So I started reading books and yet I found that many of them contradict each other, while they all provide reason and explanation for their teachings.
I still struggle to chose the right people to surround myself with and learn from and the right information to absorb. Any advice?
