Lot's of people are having to replace expensive appliances only because some trivial part is broken and no spare parts are available. Of course, you'd have to be careful of the risks involved if a part made by you broke and some kind of damage followed, electrical water or otherwise. But there is hardly any risk to things like drain covers.
