A Pain He Will Never Forget – A Summer Kidney Stone Case

in Story On Steem3 days ago (edited)

Greetings, fellow Steemians! 👋

As the temperature continues to rise, one health issue is becoming increasingly common in our OPD: kidney stones.

Today, I would like to share a real case (with complete patient confidentiality maintained) that serves as an important reminder of why staying hydrated is so crucial during the summer months.

The Patient's Story

A young man walked into the OPD looking visibly distressed. He could barely sit comfortably and kept holding his right side.

When I asked him what was wrong, he replied:

"Doctor, I have never experienced pain like this before. It starts in my back and shoots down towards my lower abdomen."

The pain had started suddenly and was coming in waves. At times, it was so severe that he felt nauseated.

As I took his history, one detail stood out immediately.
He worked outdoors for long hours under the hot summer sun and admitted that he drank very little water throughout the day.

The Investigation

Considering his symptoms, an ultrasound examination was advised.

The result confirmed what we suspected: a renal stone (kidney stone).

For the patient, the diagnosis explained the intense pain he had been suffering from.
For me, it was yet another reminder of how dehydration can silently affect our health.

Why Do Kidney Stones Increase in Summer?

During hot weather, our bodies lose a significant amount of water through sweating.
When we fail to replace that lost fluid:

Urine becomes concentrated.

Minerals and salts accumulate.

Crystals begin to form.

Over time, these crystals can develop into kidney stones.
This is one of the reasons why we see a noticeable rise in kidney stone cases during the summer season.

Prevention Is Better Than Pain

Fortunately, many kidney stones can be prevented by simple lifestyle measures:

✅ Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

✅ Increase fluid intake if you work outdoors.

✅ Do not rely on soft drinks as a replacement for water.

✅ Seek medical advice if you develop flank pain, burning urination, or blood in urine.

Final Thoughts

As doctors, we often witness how a simple habit can make a huge difference.
This patient learned a painful lesson about hydration, but hopefully his story can help others avoid the same experience.

Remember: Your kidneys work for you 24 hours a day. Give them the water they need.

Thank you for reading.

Stay hydrated, stay healthy, and take care of your kidneys. 💙
