SC-S29/W2- Nostalgia Of The Liitle Me : Childhood Food Memories
My childhood days were full of sweet memories, which I can vividly recall, including how I used to eat different types of food as a child. Then all I knew was to eat play and then go to bed and sleep.
What childhood food or dish do you still remember clearly, and why is it special to you?
Cabin Biscuits, Palo Biscuits, Digestive Biscuits, and Shortbread mixed with custard or pap (akamu) are still the childhood foods that I remember clearly. This food is special to me then and now because they're easy to prepare and tastes so nice. Biscuit is sweet and a shortbread biscuit is a type of biscuit that I like eating even to this day.
Who usually prepared this food for you, and how did it make you feel at that time?
My mother is the one who usually prepares this food for me. Anytime my mother go the market should buy my food and come and stick them in the house and if today she prepares custard for me she will serve it with shortbread, then the next day she will prepare pap (akamu) for me.
It makes me feel motherly loved, care and grown, which I feel so special and loved by my mom. I feel happy and blessed to have such a sweet and caring woman as a mother each time I remember my childhood.
When and where did you usually eat it (home, school, village, special occasions)?
I usually eat it in the morning as breakfast at home before going to school. Although there are some times that I do eat it at school whenever I am late for school or don't feel like eating at home my mother would package the food inside my lunch bag for me to take to school.
What emotions come back when you think about the taste, smell, or moment?
Thinking back about the taste, smell, or moment come with:
Warmth and comfort: as a classic comfort food, the combination of warm, creamy custard and crunchy biscuits provides an immediate sense of safety, soothing, and emotional stability.
Childhood Nostalgia: The sensory experience especially the aroma of warm sugar and vanilla evokes memories of being cared for often reminding me of my mother and home.
Joy and Pleasure: The sweet, sugary flavor triggers the release of happy hormones like serotonin in the brain and dopamine, creating a momentary feeling of delight.
Is this food still part of your life today, or does it remain only as a memory?
The food is still part of my life today. I prepare and take custard and biscuits as my breakfast before going out of my room. It is very easy to prepare custard and below is how I prepare custard.
What is needed to make Custard
- Custard Powder
- Water (Hot and Cool)
- Evaporated Milk (Peak Milk) or sachet
- Sugar (to taste)
Preparation
- I put the custard into a plate. During the preparation it rises, so you can use a big bowl if you are making a large custard.
- I began mixing it by pouring a small quantity of cold water into the bowl of custard powder. I stir and add some more water till I have a medium mix with no lumps.
While mixing I have already put some quantity of water in the fire to boil. As the water get boil I then pour it into the custard and stir it.
I add sachet milk and some sugar and stir everything to the way I like it.
The custard is ready. I serve with a biscuit and enjoy myself.

Greetings,
Thank you so much for participating in the contest.
Reading your childhood food memories was truly enjoyable. The love and care connected to biscuits, custard, and pap (akamu) reflect one of the most colorful parts of your childhood.
Moments like breakfast in the morning, eating before school, or carrying food in your lunch bag when late are really touching. You explained the taste, smell, and feelings around the food very well.
Sharing the steps of making custard also made the post more interesting. Wishing you all the best.
