SLC-S33/W5 | Beyond the Map : The Living Heritage

Every place carries traditions, skills, and stories that connect the past with the present. Some forms of heritage can be found in historic buildings, while others continue through local crafts, traditional occupations, food culture, markets, neighborhoods, and everyday community life.

This week, participants are invited to explore places where local heritage is still alive and practiced today. Through Steem Atlas, share a location that represents a living tradition, cultural practice, traditional skill, or way of life, helping others understand its importance, continuity, and role in the local community.

What Participants Should Capture

You may capture:

• Traditional craft or artisan areas
• Places known for traditional occupations or skills
• Heritage marketplaces with long-standing cultural significance
• Traditional food-making or locally distinctive food areas
• Historic neighborhoods where traditional lifestyles continue
• Local workshops or businesses preserving traditional skills
• Cultural or community places where traditions are still practiced
• Places where traditional activities or occupations are passed from one generation to another

Choose a place that clearly represents living heritage, cultural continuity, and local identity.

Note: Temporary fairs, seasonal markets, and one-time cultural events are not allowed. Entries that do not match the contest theme will not be considered for evaluation.

1. Where is this place located, how can visitors reach it, and when did you visit it?

2. What tradition, craft, occupation, food culture, or community practice makes this place culturally significant?

3. How has this heritage been preserved and passed from one generation to another?

4. How does this living heritage contribute to the local community or economy today?

5. What can visitors see, learn, or experience here that helps them understand the local culture and heritage?

6. What challenges could threaten this heritage, and what can be done to help preserve it for future generations?

Writing Guidelines

• Share your personal observations and experiences.
• Explain the cultural or traditional importance of the place.
• Describe the heritage activity, skill, occupation, or practice that is still continuing today.
• Explain how the tradition has been maintained or passed down through generations.
• Share useful information that helps readers understand the location.
• Include opening and closing times if appropriate.
• Write meaningful descriptions for every photograph.
• Focus on storytelling rather than short captions.
• Explain why the place and its heritage remain valuable today.

Submission Rules

• Publish your post in the Story On Steem Community.
• Your publication must contain at least 400 words.
• Participants may write in any language.
• Share at least 10 original photographs with meaningful captions.
• Add at least one original video (45 seconds to 1 minute).
• Correct Google Maps link and Steem Atlas pin are required.
• Include the actual date of your visit.
• Read and follow the 21 Tips to Make Better Posts for Steem Atlas.
• You may set 10%–25% beneficiaries to @steem-atlas.
• Review a location that you have not reviewed previously.
• Do not reuse photographs from previous Steem posts.
• Maintain good markdown formatting and presentation.
• Plagiarism and AI-generated content are strictly prohibited.
• Only one entry per participant.
• Invite at least three friends to participate.
• Leave your post link in the comment section of this contest post.

Photography Guidelines

• Use clear, original, and well-framed photographs.
• Capture the heritage itself, rather than only the general surroundings.
• Show traditional crafts, products, tools, architecture, activities, or other details that represent the heritage.
• Capture people participating in traditional activities only where appropriate and while respecting their privacy.
• Avoid blurry, heavily edited, or unrelated photographs.
• Keep all photographs connected to the same location or nearby area.
• Ensure your video complements your review and shows the heritage, activity, or atmosphere of the location.
• Your photographs and video should help readers understand why this is living heritage.
