This week's proposal reminded me of my childhood and the food my mother used to prepare for my siblings and me during those difficult years that I remember with great nostalgia.
What food or dish from your childhood do you still remember clearly and why is it special to you.

We are a large family; there were 12 siblings. You can imagine how difficult it is to feed so many people three times a day. It must have been difficult for my mother.

But she would make us scones with butter and cheese, which went the furthest so there was enough for everyone. For me, she had a secret ingredient that no chef could match: the way my mum looked after us. All we had to do was study and play. Nowadays, I make them for my children, though not as often as my mum did, as times have changed, but they still love them.

Flour for making scones
Who usually prepared this food for you, and how did it make you feel at that time?

The buns are made with corn flour, the traditional kind that has always been used, or the kind that was used in my childhood, which is bread flour, although nowadays there are many brands of flour. This is how my mum makes them.

To make the buns, my mum used cornflour, water and salt.

When the water in the kitchen boiled, my mum would put the dumplings in to cook.

Finally, when they were ready, he added cheese and butter and gave us two buns each on pewter plates.

Many images from my childhood come to mind, especially when I asked my mum how to know when they were ready, watching the butter melt, and that flavour makes me feel the way my mum used to tell us she loved us and that we would be safe with her.

When and where did you usually eat it (home, school, village, special occasions)?

At home, I ate scones with cheese and butter; they were my breakfast and dinner almost every day of the week. My paternal grandmother used to make us scones when we visited her, and sometimes arepas, but scones were the easiest and most filling, especially considering how many of us there were. I like to cut the scones into small squares and mix everything together.

What emotions come back when you think about the taste, smell, or moment?

When I prepared this dish again for this challenge, I had many mixed feelings. I felt nostalgia for those moments we spent at home. I could smell freshly brewed coffee and hear my mum listening to the radio. I feel grateful because, despite the difficulties, we never go without food at home. I feel tenderness for my childhood self. I also feel melancholy for my mum and how difficult it was for her to feed us. Flashbacks of all those images of my brothers and sisters their plates to the sink. Today, I feel happy that even though my childhood was not one of abundance, there was always bread with cheese and butter.

Is this food still part of your life today, or does it remain only as a memory?

Butter scones, although I still make them, I don't do it as often as my mum did. They're not necessarily for breakfast or dinner; I make them from time to time. They go well with barbecues, and seasoned scones are the best. It all depends on what I feel like.

Greetings,

Thank you so much for participating in the contest.

Your writing was truly wonderful. You beautifully shared the reality of a large family, your mother’s struggles, and how she prepared food for everyone with very limited ingredients. The way you described your mother’s care and love as a “secret ingredient” is really admirable.

The cooking steps are clearly shown with images and captions, which makes the post easy to follow. Your description of childhood memories, the home environment, your mother’s presence, and the emotions of that time truly takes the reader back to those moments.
