Poetic Driver: A Good Samaritan as well!
Poetic nature mostly belongs to people who are indulging themselves with pen and paper but one man proved that one whose hands grip tight on the steering wheel can also do poems.
He is Mr. Victor Villegas. He was said to be the popular driver in Cebu. He went viral in Facebook. Why? Because Manong Victor quickly catching the attention of many of his unique style of entertaining his passengers. During his everyday trips from Mandaue City, Manong Victor talks to his passengers in "balak", a form of spoken poetry to the Philippine province. His amazingness and wit thread words together in his Cebuano dialect has led to him becoming famous. Manong Victor is a simple, kind-hearted, funny, and loving father who currently living in Mandaue. He originally came from Boljoon, Southern part in Cebu. He has four children, three of them are in college. He said he supports his family by driving his jeepney from 5 am to midnight. He explained that through his "balak"makes him forget about his personal issues or woes as passengers along with him.
The first time we met him was in our school. His roundtrip was from Mandaue City to Cathedral in which he can pass by our school too. We always waiting for a jeepney in front of our school. We're so desperate cause we have not yet "kasakay" or ride. Manong Victor passed by in front of us, he called us and said "Come and ride with us. I'm pity with this good students who are having a hard time getting a ride." At first, we don't have an idea who he is. As we rode along his jeepney, he started to talked. We kept on wondering why some of the passengers started to laugh. We cannot hear him clearly cause we seated at the end of the jeepney. But, when it stops, that's the time we can hear him and we're shocked and amazed by him cause he talks like a poet. Though it's Cebuano dialect, but he sounds really great and we can even related to him. As his poem entails, Manong Victor stopped from going to school and decided to look for a work which leads him in the driving job. He refers jokingly to his own story.
The second time around, he saw us again walking in the street. T'was the time that the last mass in Basilica del Sto. Niño has ended. People from the church striving for riding a jeepney or other public transpo including students. We're having a hard time cause some jeepney drivers would not allow us to ride, they were rejecting us(students). They prioritize the passengers from the church. However, me and my classmates waited for how many hours for us to at home already because t'was already 11 pm, still, nobody offered us to ride even hitched. So we decided to walked from our school to SM City Cebu. We're very tired, hungry and our feet was already heavy. So we walked and walked and walked, until someone beeping us and offered us to ride, gladly it was Manong Victor. We were so blessed, grateful and happy cause our sufferings has ended. He let us ride in his jeepney though it was fully loaded. He do care for us. He managed to called us for us to ride. For us, Manong Victor was considered our saviour. If it was not him, we still walking in the street.
Manong Victor is an example as a good samaritan. He cares for the people who needs help. He even a good driver for he followed the rules and regulations in the street. He entertained his passengers by his poetic words. Listening to his words relieve us from stressful day. We even more fascinated by the message of his poem. He even praised his work as he can received his salary everyday which is nearer to those working in offices. Manong Victor even advised to the young women to choose drivers to be their husband if they wanted to be truly loved cause it goes parallel to the notion that "Drivers are sweet lovers.". Though it's funny but that's the reality.
The meaning of this story is to be kind and help anyone in need even if you do not know them. As Christians, we need to be an example unto others. When it comes to helping people, plan ahead and foresee the needs. Also, it is important to follow through on our commitments. Jesus told lots of heart melting stories to help people change their ways.
As what in the bible verse says,
