Dominica Sunsets and Jellyfish stings

A sunset from mooring in Dominica’s capital. We had a lay over day there on the boat because there was no wind to sail with. Having not cleared customs, you legally can’t get on land and we were in between “the Saints,” (French islands), and Saint Lucia. We were encouraged by the local “boat boys” that helped us catch a mooring that they’re the only ones who know if anyone leaves the boats and they’d even give us a ride to shore. We chose to spend the day cleaning the boat. Captain @justinvagabond scrubbed the hull and rudder. Scraping and scrubbing the green life off the bottom of the boat makes for a cleaner drag and therefore faster sail. It involves diving fins, a snorkel mask, a hand scrub brush, paint scraper, and a lot of energy. I was happy to cool off and swim some “laps.” I dove off the boat and immediately felt a pain on my finger. Several strokes later, after a definite sting on my arm and most painfully, my bum, I was back on the boat in moments. Showering I felt like I was still being stung all over. Captain continued his underwater chore for over an hour more. When he was back on deck he shared that he had been getting stung the whole time and was feeling sick!
This was my limited Dominica experience.
I generally take a lot of photos, especially of sunsets. You never know when it will morph into super magic or just disappointingly fade. I thought it would be nice to share a sunset progression to justify my excessive sunset capturing. All photos are original, obviously, always, and taken on an iphone6 and have been unfiltered or color adjusted.

The top of the sea is easy to be enraptured by in the melting sunlight.

Always have to look the other way too! Dominica got really banged up in the hurricanes and was already a comparatively poor independent nation. There was construction racket constantly.

And a bonus rainbow on shore from the afternoon.

I appreciate your condolences! Just part of the treachery of being a boat ornament, mermaid, and professional cloud watcher in the Caribbean. The sting went away by the following day.

Is this something you planned on taking a picture of or something spur of the moment? :)

When you live on a boat sunrises and sunsets are main events. They’re not always this awesome but definitely always enjoyable. No plans just life. The other advantage to long days of sailing and starting in the dark is BIOLUMINESCENCE where the stars are out and the wake of the boat looks like waves churning dragonflies! It’s like you’re passage is through the stars! This last week was extra special in sky event watching because it included moon sets before dawn and moonrise’s with the full moon which are generally uncapturable in their glory with a phone.

Dark and then predawn. And the seas were unusually calm around Dominica.
