Jamaican Super Conscious Foods from the Source

Every morning at the Source Farm Eco-Village in Jamaica, we’d eat a breakfast of local super conscious delicious foods. A giant fruit platter was always on the table with something warm too - sometimes greens, boiled or fried plantain, sweet potato or bammy (a Jamaican cassava gluten-free flatbread).

Here’s some facts about the food and fruits of this day's breakfast at the Source.

Pak Choi - Also known as Bok Choy, is a cruciferous leafy green. It offers many healthy nutrients including those that protect from cancer, promote bone health, promote heart health and reduce inflammation. Here it’s sautéed with onions and carrots.

Jackfruit - Now becoming popular in the vegan community, Jackfruit is a GIANT fruit that is part of the Mulberry family. The flesh is yellow and comes out of the giant fruit in small pieces. It’s super tasty and offers health benefits too! It enhances immunity, boosts magnesium levels, delivers a high dose of Vitamin B6, and aids digestion.

Jamaican Apple - The Otaheite Apple is shaped similarly to an American pear. It has a deep red skin and a white flesh. It’s a great source of Vitamin C. This apple makes a gorgeous delicious pink juice, it’s also nice to eat raw. It promotes healthy skin, boosts circulation, and helps build strong bones.

Paw Paw - Also known as Papaya, it has orange sweet and soft flesh. It helps lower blood sugar levels, fight cancer and kills parasites. Many part of the Paw Paw fruit was used in herbal medicine, including the leaves and the seeds,

Starfruit - When sliced, this fruit forms a beautiful green star shape. It is crunchy, firm and super juicy with a texture similar to grapes. The entire fruit is edible, including the skin. Starfruit is slightly sweet and a little bit tart. It contains a lot of Vitamin C, helping to fight infection. It also helps maintain healthy blood pressure.

Breadfruit - Breadfruit is a fruit, but has a spongy texture like bread. It’s the large yellow slice in the photo. Breadfruit is a staple food in Jamaica and the tree has an incredible yield. It’s gluten-free and loaded with fiber. Now it’s being used to make gluten-free flour! In Jamaica, sometimes the entire fruit is roasted, peeled and eaten. Also, people there eat it sliced and lightly fried. It’s rich in amino acids, helping the body to store nutrients. It also helps keep your heart strong!

OMG I miss the fruit platters so much already! And I'm craving bammy too 😂 Where can we get startfruit and fresh hard coconuts in upstate NY?!?!
