I gave up meat years ago for various reasons. It's not sustainable to carry on as we are. Either people need to eat less of it or we need alternatives. Growing meat directly will get cheaper. You would think there would be demand for cruelty free meat
I agree, the production growth can be largely attributed to overeating in the developed countries, while in poor countries there is still a shortage of food.
Personally, I can't give up meat, but I think today's industry is short-lived because of its inefficiency.
