100 DAYS OF STEEM : Day 24 - Recruiting Steem GreeterssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #the100daysofsteem5 years ago (edited)

As we all know the first few weeks on Steem can be confusing and offputting.

If a newcomer isn’t lucky enough to find, or be found, by a friendly community, or at least a helpful guiding hand, there is a high chance they may give up and leave the platform.

This is one of the main reasons for our low retention rate that clearly needs to be addressed.

Improving the onboarding process and setting up a full mentoring system are areas that are being looked at - but they will take time.

In the meantime we’ve come up with a quick fix that we can implement straightaway.

But we need your help - and we can give you a reward for helping!

The Newcomers Community

We are setting up a Community for newcomers to the platform.

This will be a place with instructional posts, friendly faces and helpful upvotes.

Newcomers will be encouraged to post their ‘introduceyourself’ posts so others can come and meet them. Established Steemians can come along and give tips and advice in comments on their posts, and maybe even invite them to the communities they are involved with.

The Community will be part help centre and part welcoming committee. And the aim is to do it all on-chain through comments and posts without the need for people to join Discord that can be both confusing and offputting.

We need people to help with this new Community, particularly to go out and find the newcomers and invite them in.

Steem Greeters

We need Meeters and Greeters.

Steem Greeters, as they will be badged, will be expected to go out looking for newcomers to the platform, and invite them to join the newcomers forum.

The Greeters will be expected to provide a number of services within the Community including…

  • giving advice and tips on writing a good introductory post
  • general help on post formatting, markdown etc
  • answering questions on technicalities such as powering up, Steem v SBD, upvoting and downvoting etc
  • guiding newcomers to established communities that may be of interest.

The Greeters will also be encouraged to create how-to, help and guidance type posts for the newcomers community - particularly for any areas not already covered in existing posts. These posts will likely attract extra vote rewards from Steemit accounts.

To encourage people to volunteer as Greeters we will be giving each person selected a direct delegation starting at 1000 SP.

The delegations will be direct to their account and will be ongoing as long as they continue in the role.

Greeters can also make posts introducing the newcomers they have brought to the Newcomers Community each week, and giving progress updates on previous ‘recruits’.

These posts will be rewarded with votes from Steemit accounts. They will also be used, along with other observations, to assess how well the Greeters are performing.

The plan is to have an increasing delegation scale to reward the efforts of the most dedicated and hardworking Greeters.

How to apply to become a Steem Greeter

If you are interested in becoming a Steem Greeter please make an application post giving details of…

  • your experience on Steem
  • any languages you speak, and the level of fluency in each
  • what country and timezone you are in
  • any communities you are actively involved in
  • why you would make a good Steem Greeter.

Please tag your application post with #steemgreeterapplication and put a link to the post in the comments below.

In the first instance applications should be made in English, but we will be expanding this to other languages shortly.

We will be recruiting more Greeters each month, but for the first round applications should be posted by midnight UTC on Thursday 30 April.

Four Steem Greeters will be recruited in the first round.

The Newcomers Community and the Steem Greeters is a new venture so it will likely need some tweaking and adjustment as we go along.

We welcome any thoughts and suggestions on the project.

The hope and the plan is that this project will help to make newcomers feel more welcome on the platform, help them better understand how Steem works and encourage them to stay.

This will be one part of a strategy to improve the retention rate.

Thank you,

The Steemit Team

Hello @ciska,

Thank you very much for writing out this comment! While I appreciate the sentiment, I intend to personalize my comments to their respective posts to demonstrate a commitment to reading and understanding about new users. It would be fairly easy to set up a bot to comment your comment though!

In regards to the Steem Exclusive tag, I do not want to try to force new users to pick sides right away. I am hopeful that their experiences on Steem will trump their experiences on Hive. In addition, I don't believe @steemitblog specified that I should be actively seeking and promoting Steem Exclusive newcomers. I think it is important to remember that you get more flies with honey than with vinegar. I have commented on several introduce articles that were also on Hive because I think it is important to learn from the mistakes of the Hive developers, and not burn bridges before they can be crossed. I do agree that Steem exclusive content is important, but I think it is important to take it one step at a time.

Lastly, please feel free to check out this post I've made about an idea for a Steem-Greeter Achievement System. I think this will help to teach users more about Steem, and hopefully lead them in the direction of Steem exclusive content. I would love to hear your ideas!

Best regards!
@cmp2020

Thanks for your thoughts and I really really like that this is discussed!

YEAHH if you have time to welcome them personally go for it. I only think its a good idea to add this under your own welcome message. This info is just a simple guide to push them in the right direction, and that they get in contact with people who are passionate about steem. New users, if they double dip, we have to give the BEST experience possible!
I completely trust your judgment on how to achieve that.
Steemexcluse tag is just to promote Steemit, I feel that people post original content on Steemit and put time and effort in it, they also should get rewarded. (Because there arent 1000s of new users every day, we want to reward Steemit users in general. It doesnt have to be that THEY are steemexclusive, the content has to be imo.

Thanks for thinking with us and your involvement!

That's exactly what a bot called @cn-hello we created for CN community would do.
It searches all newcomers who written in Chinese and replies to the posts. In the reply, it would tell the newcomers some basic rules about RC, plagiarism, and where to find us if they have any issue. Also a link to our Steem Guide handbook: https://steemh.org/

It makes a daily and weekly progress report.

This bot is working great and save us some time to greet newcomers manually. But the main problem isn't there aren't enough people here to greet and guide newcomers, it's currently we don't get many newcomers.

Looking at this chart, it shows how many newcomers @cn-hello has welcomed since May 2019. Since the HF21/22 (Around October 2019), less and less newcomers joined.

I think steemit should focus more on instant signup and new users RC issues.

Good job @ericet, something similar I have detected among the Spanish speaking community, many months with few new users.

We see only a handful of new users joined to our CN community for past 3 months. This need to be changed.

We are interested in any ideas you have for attracting new Spanish speaking users.

The Steemit Team

This looks like a very good process.

Do you think your system could be replicated to work in other languages as well?

Onboarding new users in the coming weeks and months will be a big focus for us too.

All ideas for that are welcome.

Is WhereIN doing any promotional / marketing campaigns at present?

Thank you

The Steemit Team

Yes, the system can be replicated to work in other languages but some modifications needed. The code is open source: https://github.com/steem-guides/cn-hello, created by @robertyan, one of our @cn-witnesses members.

WhereIN just started some events in CN community. Hope these events will get more users into steem.

Thank you for this information. Very useful to know your system is open source and available to all.

Good luck with the WhereIN events. If appropriate let us know the details and we can mention them in the 100 Days posts.

The Steemit Team

Thank you.We started some events like this :https://steemit.com/wherein/@wherein/wherein-may-play-happily.If you can metion it in the 100 Days posts, that will make it great.

We need Meeters and Greeters.

Steem Greeters, as they will be badged, will be expected to go out looking for newcomers to the platform

I HAVE BEEN GREETING AND ONBOARDING FOR 2 years now, every single day, answering and guiding new people even with a free help Discord.

We reward the good introduceyourself posts not the APPICS and the 10 word count ones, the ones with sign and we sort out the abusers and the vote farm entries.

We do damn good!

The proof is on the blockchain! We, I never been rewarded for this but great that this is in here for me now.

So go and look at @heyhaveyamet or my blog and show the support that you talk about.

Offcourse I am available on Discord aswell
I am anxiously awaiting this new proces.

My first post on Steemit was welcomed by you and I will never forget how it felt. You people do truly amazing work!

You just made my day, this is so nice. I love the fact that you like what we are doing. And the invite for theterminal discord is still open if you want to join. For me and @JAMERUSSELL this is an a gem of a comment again, thank you

Nice to hear that! I just joined theterminal on discord, thank you! Hope you do well and that you enjoyed Woningsdag :D Grtjs

Thank you for all the efforts you did/do for newbies to the STEEM ecosystem!
@heyhaveyamet is an AWESOME project and I endorse your application to become official STEEM greeter.

@steemitblog: Please consider @heyhaveyamet as your STEEM greeter. This project is around for years and with help of Steemit they can provide even more value. It is important that new gems can be found in the mass, and that users with high potential get extra care and guidance. This project does that for you, its a no-brainer :D

I will find and upvote the rough diamonds selected by the greeters!

I see they did :D

You and @heyhaveyamet have definitely done good work. Thank you.

How do you follow up and keep in touch with newcomers after the initial introductions?

Will you or @heyhaveyamet be making an application post to be a Steem Greeter?

Thank you

The Steemit Team

Another good idea to help new users grow on Steem! I appreciate the mention about my new community for the development of applications on Steem.

Great idea. I take note and join your Discord

Definitely a solid step to onboard new users but it needs to solve root issues to ensure long term success

  1. Every new user gets confused with 4 different keys, so there is a need for universal password (an easy to remember password) just like other social media so users can login to their accounts from any where and whenever they needed to be active on steem. Right now due to the long keys, either they are stuck to particular machine or phone or will have to remember this long enough key to login to some other system. This is where steem lacking behind as compared to other social media so it needs to be sorted somehow.

  2. There needs to be a referral system with atleast 10% for affiliates so more vibrant campaign can be made and in return promoters can earn long term rewards for their efforts. Right now curation/author split is 50/50 which can be made 45 each and 10% can go to affiliates. This will help boost things a lot.

Free and instant signups should be promoted through all dapps and steemit site. DLIKE has already taken a step towards this and have an instant and free signup through email verification for new users.

There already is a master password. From this master password. all other keys are derived. An easy to remember password, is an easy for a computer to guess password. Fortunately, browsers and password managers can memorize passwords for you. The SteemKey extension keeps the keys off the websites.

These are definitely areas we are looking at.

We would be interested to know more about your instant signup process. Do the users get a Steem account through that as well?

The Steemit Team

This a really a good news to hear. Hope steem Will great again someday

Thank you for your application to become a Steem Greeter.

The Steemit Team

I missed this one and what a great one! Thank you for understanding greeting people as they come on board is important.

Yes definitely an area to build on. Hopefully we will be able to grow this over the coming weeks and months.

When I started in Steemit 2 years ago there were a bunch of people helping the newcomers that introduced themselves at #introduceyourself, now I don´t see it very often. I know a spanish community that is resposible of bringing a lot of spanish-speaking newcomers and teaching them the basics, them they teach how to introduceyourself, markdown and they answer your doubts or any question on discord.

So I nominate @mayvil of @mayvileros to be a Steem Greeter

There´re some good application already in the comments :) oh, and thank you for mentioning the spanish new game development community, much appreciated.

Thank you for the suggestions. This round of Greeter applications has now closed, but we will be recruiting more people soon.

oK, thank you
