Blogging and Success: Taking Notes for Later Vs. "Just Writing it Out"
I have to confess that I have always been a note taker.
I pretty much write myself notes about everything, much of that for the simple reason that my memory has never been all that good.
One of the things I often take notes about — and that has been especially true since I started blogging again — are good topics to write about. The reason I take notes rather than just sit down at the computer and start typing is that most of these good ideas come to me when I'm actually nowhere near sitting in my office.
So while I'm standing in the kitchen — for example — some idea will come to me in the middle of making pancakes, so I'll grab a piece of paper and a pen and feverishly scratch myself down some notes for a few minutes and then I'll resume making pancakes.
That way I good idea at least has the potential to not go to waste!
Of course, one of the side effects of writing down all these fleeting ideas on pieces and paper is the fact that I have a small box on my desk containing growing collection of a lot of notes that I've just never gotten around to getting back to revisiting and turning into blog posts!
Looking at that in isolation I'd be tempted to say that my system doesn't work, but the truth is my system actually does work pretty well because I'm just never very good at sitting down in front of a blank screen and starting to type.
Which leads me to reflect on the question of whether it's better to take notes when you get a good idea, order simply set aside writing time and be satisfied with whatever comes out during your dedicated writing time.
I already know what my answer is going to be, but people have different working styles and somebody else might have a completely different way of approaching their creativity.
I am now almost 5 1/2 years into my blogging experience here on Steemit and I have written around 1660 posts, and that's a lot of writing. When I look back across all that, it would be fair to say look well over 2/3 of those posts or the result of following up on a note I made to myself at some earlier point.
Just based on that, I'm pretty sure I will just continue taking notes!
Thanks for reading, and enjoy the rest of your week!
How about YOU? What sort of approach do you use to create your blog posts? DO you take notes for "later," or do you write "in the moment?" Do leave a comment — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!
